Actually I think we will sign a CB but will be someone rarely mentioned or not mentioned like the Bernardo signing. Young up and comer sort of thing. Some Ajaxfan @Ruzzles mentioned two before De Ligt and ? Davison Sanchez. But maybe we are getting the full back and keeper situation sorted first. The seeing what's happening with Alexis Sanchez and Mbappe before committing to a bid?

Not a Ajax fan but yea both would be great options City wanted to sign De Ligt when he was 15/16 so they know what he is capable of but he is only 17 so needs time Sanchez is more ready and would be serious competition for the current CBs

Not had chance to follow this properly but hoping it's not the case that VVD is going elsewhere.

Transfers are a gamble & often don't work out but I can't think of anyone else we could sign who would be as potentially suitable.

If it finally shuts the faces of the smug, rag mentality, characters on here who keep giving it the 'we're Man City we don't need to blah, blah, blah' perhaps some good will come of it.

Obviously disappointed, really wanted him to come here. But, there's talent out there- I hope we get our own Asensio/Kimmich/Weigl

Yep, think this will be a bit of a fuck up not going all out trying to sign him.

I think it's far more "raggy" to say: "It's ok if a player states he prefers another rival domestic club to move to while we are still showing interest... lets break the bank to make sure they don't get the player or we might regret it some day..."(or not) That reeks of rag entitlement more than anything else, that's what they were known for.

Why force a move through if the player isn't giving off the right signals? Especially in such an important transfer window, it's going to be expensive as it is so we need to be smart about things, basing everything on one season in the prem isn't a dead cert for anything(before you even think about arguing with this... Bony) no we need players committed from day one or we don't sign for me, not for these prices. It's one of the reasons although I liked the idea of getting Isco, I'm glad we didn't sign him because he never really wanted to come and he might not have settled as a result, B Silva seems like a much better fit for us as it turns out... sometimes it really is better to wait and see rather than panic and break the bank to force someone's hand.

If what was reported he said was true then let him have the move he wants, Laporte might not have signed but it wasn't because he publicly stated he wanted a different move so even going back in for him would be better. If we can pip Barca to Davinson Sánchez Mina then great, there are other options just as promising and possibly better suited for us.

Do we really need a CB, though?

We looked great in those final two months with Vinny back and even Otamendi looked a class act.

Imagine what Vinny will do for Stones, the best exponent of what Pep is trying to achieve.

Irrespective of Vinny's fitness issues, our failings last season were down to not scoring enough and taking our chances, not him missing.

It was the nature of how we conceded, not the amount (certainly in relation to Spurs) which coloured the narrative of last season.

My opinion is that two world class full backs and the extra firepower will take less onus on us having to have Baresi and Maldini at the back.

Save the £60m, keep Mangala or play Tosin if we have to, and put it down towards securing Mbappe and Sanchez.

Pep's made it clear how important Kompany has been, and even mentioned how dearly Manuel must've missed him last season at least in two different pressers.

Not to mention we literally have looked more solid at the back with Kompany in the team.

Think we're just coming up with consolations if we don't sign a CB. But, it's obvious we need one mate, obvious to Pep at least.

You're correct that Pep has stated we'd be getting a CB, but what Tolm said is accurate too - our failings last season were primarily in missed chances. Pep has said as much on multiple occasions.

He's likely buying a forward this summer, if not Sanchez/Mbappe then another, and that seems much higher up the priority list for City right now.

That we didn't push hard for VVD only adds to that.

However much stats say that we've been good in the PL, in the Champions League I simply don't believe that anybody at the club is comfortable going in with Stones Otamendi Kolarov and an injury-prone Kompany.

Aside from Kompany, we don't have anybody to play at the highest level in the CL. You only need to look at the best teams to see the gulf in quality in terms of the centre-back pairing. Factor in that Kompany is less likely to be fit most of the times, and that gulf becomes astronomical.

Bonucci is very likely in Pep's mind, but I have my reservations about him. Moving from a defensive team like Juve who only sometimes play attacking football to a Pep team where it's perpetual high-line attacking football is something to think about.

Whilst we do have a propensity to grossly overpay for centre backs (who seldom live up to expectations), I would be disappointed if we failed to strengthen this area in the window.

Even though I cannot profess to be an aficionado of football, I fail to see the logic in signing both Sanchez and Mbappe this summer, especially if it's at the expense of a defensive reinforcement.

From my perspective, we would ideally sign one of the above forwards + a versatile defender, who can play at centre back and in midfield, when required.

I am of the opinion that it won't be the end of the world if VVD does sign for LFC, or even CFC

I have, of course, only watched VVD occasionally on MOTD on BBC, or output from ITV, or BT1, etc

Other members of the forum clearly have more in-depth knowledge and have probably even viewed a DVD on VVD

I am also aware of historical issues when SAF nicked RVP

What I think we can all agree on is that usage of three digit names should be strictly verboten

Kevin's passing stats plummeted last season when usage of KDB reached an all time high, whilst Martin's career came to a shuddering end when some bozo decided that it was appropriate to refer to him as MDM, despite being the proud owner of only two names

Please bear the above in mind, should Virgil be a jolly good thunderbird and have a change of heart

I get where you are coming from and indeed it must have been a huge blow for Demichelis to suffer through these hard times.

Would rather us put that 60m into the fullbacks (1 lb and 2 rb) if we do that and bring in three world class level fullbacks then that will improve our current cb's immensely, I'm looking forward to seeing us play with capable fullbacks more so than us taking another risk on a overprice central defender

I honestly believe Fernandinho would make a great centre back. Reads the game very well, passes well and is so comfortable on the ball.
I likes VVD but not at £60m.

Thought the same last season, but given that he played left back and right back (maybe once at centre back, I cannot recall) more often, when there were opportunities for him to be played in the back two, then I just cannot see that happening. Maybe he's too valuable to us further up the park.

Watched him after we had been linked last season and was not impressed at all for a potential £40m at the time. Now it's £60m and I think that is way overpriced. Not sure who is available but if Vinny stays fit that is the key to our defensive solidity and Otamendi did much better alongside Vinny than in any other defensive pairing.
