Grenfell Tower block disaster

I would imagine the PDA for a fire in a highrise building would be 4 pumps ,water tanker and at least 1 height platform at the initial stage of the incident.
In Manchester it's 4 pumps initially, this can be quickly made up for extra pumps and platforms although I think we only have 4 left in Manchester now, no water tanker as water is from the mains and pumped into the base of the tower allowing crews to plug in inside.

Heard that chap, too. Really got the impression that the fire went straight up one end of the building and then more slowly spread across each floor. Would have thought buildings were tested for such conditions.
If it goes up the outside itbwill enter through the windows the fire loading in a flat coupled with the blow torch effect from wind will intensify the fire, now if people are leaving their flats they probably haven't shut their doors this will then allow the fire to spread internally, eventually reaching a flashpoint where everything goes up. I'm only guessing at this stage but it won't be far off that.

Can only imagine the death toll reaching triple figures looking at the videos and eye witness accounts. Absolutely devastating tragedy that possibly could have been avoided

Quite a warm night in London last night, so probably lots of open windows which would allow the fire to get inside.

Sounds horrific. The local resident seemed shocked that the fire was able to whip up the building in the gap where one wall met the other.I mentioned a Fire Safety Expert earlier in the thread who was on the BBC calling into question the closing mechanisms on the doors as well as the fire-doors themselves.

The KCTMO web site is down, no doubt there are some individuals in that organisation who will be keeping a very low profile today. Their reviews from clients are appalling.

Those blog posts are pretty damning for the building management/owners. I feel so sorry for those who died, it must be the worst feeling in the world being trapped like that.

Fire safety is a joke in lots of places. I've worked for the same company in Vietnam and Morocco, but it's a British company and therefore is supposed to follow British safety regulations. The last three fire drills I've done (with children), we've been told we can't use the actual fire exit because it's locked. In fact, in one of those, it wasn't even a drill, it was a kid who'd pressed the alarm.

Finally i know who stupid is!

Being serious though. It's horrific and my heart goes out to those injured, a small burn is horrible and some of those who survived are going to be scarred for life. Agree with whoever said it'll be lucky if death toll isn't into 3 figures looking at the images.

Opening Paragraph from the groups webpage...no further comment required.

"It is a truly terrifying thought but the Grenfell Action Group firmly believe that only a catastrophic event will expose the ineptitude and incompetence of our landlord, the KCTMO, and bring an end to the dangerous living conditions and neglect of health and safety legislation that they inflict upon their tenants and leaseholders. We believe that the KCTMO are an evil, unprincipled, mini-mafia who have no business to be charged with the responsibility of looking after the every day management of large scale social housing estates and that their sordid collusion with the RBKC Council is a recipe for a future major disaster."

Will be interesting to see if there is any truth in Mays new advisor sat on a report highlighting the dangers of fire dangers.

She better hope there isn't.

This is exactly why I would never live in one of them. If a fire breaks out and you are in the upper floors it's a death trap. I can't think of many worse ways to go. Those poor people.

Also massive respect to the firefighters who risk their lives running into burning buildings to save as many lives as they could.

AGAIN - can we keep the thread for news please.

If you wish to talk politics use the threads available.

If a terrorists kills innocent people we can talk about terrorism and even laws relating to terrorism, but if a landlord gets away with housing their tenants in a fire trap, taking advantage of lax legislation and people die, we can't talk about the landlord or the legislation?

That would sound about right. The PDA over here in Ireland would be the same as we generally copy almost word for word the UKs standard operational guidines. Even a standard domestic fire had a 2 pump PDA, to say only 1 pump was dispatched initially would be completely untrue. As you quite rightly say the building would have a high riser( charged from the aplliances pump or from the mains?) Would you get enough pressure from the hydrants in england to keep the line charged all the way to top of the building.

Actually if you check, my stance is consistent, in the recent terrorist attack threads we have also asked for politics, and/or reaction to the attack be kept out of the thread, and to keep the thread for news.

I can easily make it so, by thread banning people, so far I haven't.

This is obviously a tragic event, so show some respect, the time for recriminations is when the facts are known, the only known facts right now, are a major fire took place, it took hold very quickly, 6 are known to be dead, 74 injured, and 20 critical, the cause of the fire, what caused it to take hold so quickly etc etc are for the future.
