Danilo

If there was any chance that could work i'd be very happy. Solves a problem for us and it'd be nice to see things work out for him.
might just happen with kola looking like he's off to roma, we will be lacking a player to whinge about so its a win win.

I still believe there is a very very good defender in there, and I hope this is the chance he gets to show what a top player he is.

You've got to applaud the club on this one. Losing Alves and moved rapidly to entice Danilo in. Probably why we weren't moving for Fabinho too. Looks like for all the flapping on here Txiki had a solid plan b in place, and I'd wager it's the same with all of our targets.

The fact we have gone cold on Bertrand suggests to me that Mendy is all but over the line, but if something happened there Bertrand would probably be plan b.

Danilo is a very astute move considering the hit we took on Alves being a twat.

He is a good defender, but not (or wasn't) a ball playing one. Maybe his stint away has taught him these skills

Does anyone have an idea of how often he's actually played at left back? Sometimes on here people get a bit carried away about a player's versatility when in fact they've played in a particular position just once or twice. Is he genuinely a viable back up option for left back or has he just played there a couple of times like Zabaleta did very ocassionally? With Kolarov seemingly gone, if we don't get another LB it could all fall on him to cover Mendy.
I don't buy the left back cover story. With Kolarov going we are down to Walker, Mendy, Danilo, Kompany, Stones and Otamendi. 6 players for 4 positions. Seems way too light. We will sign an additional 2 players, a back up left back proper and a centre half. If we go in to the season with 6 defenders and Kompany gets injured we would seriously jerpordise our chances of winning anything.

Fernandinho is an odd case.

United, City and Chelsea - and Juve - fans were all absolutely desperate for him and he appeared to fit each team like a glove, with a modest asking price of €40m.

But absolutely no one has gone for him, despite seeming like an obvious choice, young and with universal acclaim for his performances, and now PSG are the only destination left, Monaco's arch rivals.

Something fishy going on, or PSG have gotten their claws into him so deep that everyone else has been told not to bother.

I'd take €40m for fernandinho now with a year left on his contract.

Very much a Guardiola signing, apparently. Hadn't been scouted extensively by us in the way our targets usually are, but Pep requested him personally after the Alves deal fell through.

happy as rb/dm cover, but would prefer a genuine LB to cover Mendy

Some of his best performances for Real Madrid were at LB, and he's supposedly properly two footed so I'm not worried about him covering LB, just the fact he's covering 2 injury prone players at once, at some point it's not unlikely Walker and Mendy are out at the same time.

To me it seems like we're allowing Kolarov to leave to free up funds to get Mendy across the line, so this Danilo deal must have been very much an unexpected one. Whilst his wages and other demands might not be matching Alves', it does slightly worry me that we've let four senior full backs go and only got in three - one officially and two pending - especially as the message seems to be that our budget for full backs is exceeded already. Let's not forget that last season injuries and so on forced us to play both Navas and Fernandinho at full back.

So either another forward doesn't happen, ie Sanchez, and moving also for Bertrand or whoever is not a problem, or we utilise Fernandinho again at RB, Danilo sharing RB or LB or even CM if needed, and then go for a cheaper (than Sanchez) midfield option - in which case I fully support us sticking a £30-40m bid in for Leon Goretzka as per recent reports

He's two footed..So if he was to play left-back he can still hare up and down the wing putting crosses in and could cut inside as he has a mean long shot... I'm more excited by this signing than I will be if we get Mendy

Rather just play Foden

Goretzka was no better than Bentaleb last season and he's a Spurs reject
I thought he was immense for Germany during their summer triumph and can see him having a great career at the top, strong, agile, great vision and runs well with the ball. But to be fair if he was a Pep priority then I am sure we would have been in for him last summer, but Sane and Ilkay were the choices he made when plundering the Bundesliga.

Yes and they are loaning out James right now. Its annoying we are being dicked over by those fucks :(
I understand your point, that how they've managed to end up making a profit of a poor signing is pretty annoying when you see us struggle - but if we're to believe what was being said both Conte & Pep at Chelsea & City wanted him, two of the richest clubs in the world being after a player will immediately make him go for decent value.

On top of that if he does end up being able to fulfill multiple roles, as say Fabinho was expected to do, would you not think £25-30m* for a 26 year old back up RB + LB + DM is actually reasonable in the current market being quoted at top PL teams?

*I'm back to that range, because as predicted the quoted prices have changed again, shock!
