It's Quiet - a new dawn

Rivalry with rags was one of City's main selling points since takeover and one of the reason SM bought the club - it was guaranteed media attention.

This is a line I have only ever heard rags trot out.

Mostly because it's provably bullshit, he was actively looking for a PL club and tried to buy Newcastle before us.

Just had a trip over for research purposes...my lord they are hurting...take a look at the man city ffp thread...that's even better
Oh, that's the first one I read through. Between that and the general City thread blood pressure drug salesmen would make a killing.

How do you know this? (gen question) IIRC there were several clubs in the reckoning and the barcodes were favourites but they couldn't submit a good enough value proposition

it's explained in the rest of the post. None of other teams could offer as much as free marketability as City's derby rivalry with Rags. It kicked on from the very first day. I am not SM so I wouldn't put my head on the table for that claim but if they bought another club it would be a mistake and would feel pretty sterile from marketing point of view. Newcastle purchase wouldn't cause one tenth of emotions City did worldwide. Everton was eventually much better option because of Liverpool rivalry but rags were the bigger player. I can tell it even from my point of view, I wasn't really interested in Premier League apart from hating rags from all my soul. That hatred brought me into PL forums, news portals etc. as I knew it would be painful for them if City does one over them and with time I got myself into City full time. If it was Newcastle or Everton, I couldn't have cared less.

And dodged the bullet there and finally bought us. SM couldn't have care less about either newcastle, everton or us before he invested. As you say he was actively trying to buy the club and on the end it wasn't barcodes or blue dippers, it was us. As we were best value for the money and had by far the best potential to be marketed. And whatever someone thinks about that - the best part of that marketability was the rivalry with rags.

He would have bought Newcastle if Ashley had turned up to the meeting, it had nothing to do with our marketability or rivalry with the rags, if that were his primary concern he wouldn't have tried to go after those other clubs first.

Again, it's one of the most raggy lines of thinking I've ever come across, and that's why only United fans who think they're the centre of the universe, and every decision anyone makes is to be viewed through a "how does it involve United" prism try to use it.

We were chosen because of the expansion capacity of the stadium and the vast potential for development works around the ground, as well as already having a large reliable fanbase as a starting point.

He would have bought Newcastle if he had valued them enough to send Ashley an offer he couldn't refuse. And the fact that Ashley didn't bother, tells me that the offer wasn't that magnitude of good.

Anyway, I think he is more than grateful he didn't buy it as it would be the awful purchase. Who would that purchase make angry and brought intensive media coverage? Sunderland fans? Or their nonexisting pals in the media. Who the fuck cares about Sunderland. SM couldn't have buy a better club with more potential to be marketed and expanded than City.

Development work is the good point, I agree. It certainly added to the decision.

There is no way of expanding Newcastles ground or adding other facilities because of where it's situated

It's not the most raggy thing, it's reality from the point of view of someone who is ready to invest hundreds of millions dollars. You can have the best product on the world but if that one doesn't produce emotions on the market, it's as good as the shittiest product. And boy, City had prodced emotions since 2008.

I don't care if rags think the same, it's even better if they think it's partly because of them we're better than them now, it hurts them more. I hate rags "massively" but I have zero complexes of them and won't change something I think because that's what they eventually think too. You're entitled to do opposite of course.

Another reason I have heard is that Newcastle isn't that well served by an airport, Manchester has a hub airport. It helps with foreign players knowing they can't get home easily. Newcastle is almost always 2 stops. It means that the North East isn't as much of a draw for players.

Besides that we also have muffins and barms.

No you don't understand, it's all because upsetting United fans would create media attention. We have only United to thank for all our post-takeover success.

isn't that right, @almir

Silly little things like the stadium, infrastructure, established fan base and dirt cheap price because Thaksin needed a get out are all secondary to Mansour just wanting to wind up United fans in the media.

I doubt players think about that tbh.

Yep, it's pretty much that but tbh, you didn't hit me as the one to understand that part anyway. Cheers mate.

I heard the Sheikh actually bid on Liverpool but offered less than the Americans - though he promised a more long-tem strategy, the dippers wanted the upfront cash!
I think one of the draws for him when buying us was the vast swathes of land around the stadium prime for redeveloping.

Just had a read through out of curiosity and they are hurting.

My personal favourite is this one:

They probably make loads with all their stadium sellouts. And all those passionate city fans Worldwide.

Lol jokes, they're rich because some dumbass billionaire thought he was buying United

Haha, I thought about posting that one and the one where the poster ends it with "I hope this makes it to Bluemoon" as they are both equally bile-filled.

So to summarise, by my calculations we have spent £206m and recuperated £38m from player sales.

The difference in quality from the players we have brought in to the ones we have let go is staggering. We have trimmed the squad and replaced quantity with quality.

Add Alexis and a left footed defender who can cover centre half and left back and we will have one of the best squads in world football. The perfect blend of youth and experience, athleticism and ball playing capability.

If we get Alexis and LCB, and manage to offload the further outgoings you've listed then Txiki really has silenced his critics. Its easy saying he had the money to do it but you still need the contacts and the know how to get the players in through the door.
