Based on what SamLee has been saying on twitter / podcasts for the last month or so.
We had 4-5 main targets.
GK - Ederson
RB - Alves (Danilo) - Walker
LB - Bertrand - Mendy
Forward - Sanchez
Silva was just out of the blue/ not really reported.
Obviously Alves on a free would have allowed us to spend that money on Bertrand rather than Danilo therefore having one extra signing. By the looks of it we would have wanted to sell a few of our players rather than loan, Hart for example. Also wouldn't have anticipated Kolarov wanting to go but then again they might have "thought" about selling Otamendi. So bringing in another cover CB may have been done anyway.
So probably not brought as much money back as much as City thought we would. However Sam has always said that the vibes he's got from his "sources" is that we wanted both Mbappe and Sanchez (if Mbappe) wanted to come / Arsenal would sell.
May have overspent a bit on Mendy and Walker by 5-10m each if reports are to be believed...We seem to have had a set plan of players but Alves did mean we'd go for Plan(B)/ give up (Bertrand) < looks like he's the one to miss out.
So maybe we did set (a budget) aside to bring in EVERYONE Pep wants. Not saying we should go buy both Mbappe and Sanchez but it could be a case of we have a CB in mind and the forward we will spend big on, then next season when Yaya goes? we then look at the midfield situation.
Not saying Sams word is Gospel btw...he has been pretty much correct all summer regarding who we are bringing in, just putting it out there to get everyone excited before Madrid bring us down...oops :D
