I'm from Manchester, born and brought up here.

Ever since I became aware of politics as a teenager during the early 80's, at the height of the cold war, the astounding hypocrisy of Ronald Reagan spouting off about "freedom and democracy", whilst actively supporting CIA backed terrorists to overthrow the Nicaraguan government elected by its people, or supporting death squads in El Salvador to suppress any form of dissent against it's dictator friends, made me realize that country is full of utter shit.

Absolutely nothing has changed with that country, no matter which party or president has been in charge.

It is a truly evil empire and it astonishes me that more people can't see what I see.

Apologies there is another poster called Eagle something who’s Bosnian.

No offence but I would say your awareness of politics is too simplistic.

I’ll try and keep it simple to explain why you’re being a bit naive...

The US, during the height of the Cold War, was trying to stop communism sweeping across the globe. You know that political stance that saw millions of people die in poverty. They took very hard lines in certain areas such as those that you mentioned, some the right thing to do at the time and some the wrong.

The fact is when two super powers are enemies, even the seemingly good guys will have to do bad things to win. It’s just a fact of war. We did it by fire bombing Dresden to deter German moral and within any war innocent people are affected in the worst ways.

The US isn’t an empire, they can be accused of poking into business that isn’t there’s a sometimes too much and sometimes getting that wrong but they’re not out conquering other nations to add to the United States, as an empire would.

Declaration was always going to look thin, given the short notice and brief nature. It seems to say:
- we'll talk
- we'll work to keeping the Korean peninsula stable and peaceful
- DPRK commits to 'complete denuclearisation' of Korean peninsula (already stated with South Korea?)
- return of MIAs

Overall, it's a good thing that they're talking.
There's nothing particularly headline grabbing though.

Agreement pretty vague.
Nothing new in it.
Actually goes backwards on already 'agreed' denuclearization of Korean Peninsula . Talks about 'working towards' complete denuclearization.
Let's hope we get more concrete details.

Once again, and apart from the 40 minute meeting and a handshake, what has this meeting achieved?

A denuclearisation agreement and secured peace with NK, that no one has achieved in generations.

You can bury your head in the sand if you like and call it as fake news but you’ll only make yourself look an idiot.

Some really weird news narrative this morning:

Trump wants complete disarmament.

NK would be mad to agree to complete disarmament.

NK have agreed to complete disarmament.

NK had previously agreed to complete disarmament in meeting with SK in April.

We'll see how that plays out.

In talks in 1992 they committed to denuclearise.

They did the same in 2005.

NK will not give up it's nukes.

While there is no doubt this is a big step, it’s just that, a step. And NK are well known to back out of things once they get what they feel they want.

On one note. The level hypocrisy of the US media about this is insane. I can’t find the video at the moment but it showed the same reporters saying how Obama meeting Kim would be a travesty and the worst thing in the world the USA could do, but now it’s trump it’s the best thing ever.

Now don't fucking start with the insults. I ask a reasonable question and you come back with shit.
I'll try one more time; what has trump done to 'deserve credit' for bringing us 'closer to world peace' as BTH suggested?

Well, he's either just negotiated N.Korean nuclear disarmament, or planning permission for a Trump Tower and golf complex in Pyonyang.

In all seriousness, it sounds like he's come away with an agreement to work towards denuclearisation, which is pretty nothing above what they were already working towards anyway.

This is not fake news; it's non-news. Scrape away all the pomp and ceremony, and the basically, they have just agreed practically the same as was agreed with S.Korea back in April. Historic? Yes, but a huge propaganda win for N.Korea.

fuckin ell , credit where credit is due he has met the guy and looked him in the eye, its an important step in this ongoing long stand off. No other western leader has done it

I think some people would have preferred it if we had of just nuked them and carried on with the 'fire and fury' rhetoric.

I'd argue Trump has done far more to destabilise global relations than bring us closer to World peace. He picked a fight with Canada ffs.

In a week he's legitimised North Korea and committed to the same process that NK agreed to in 1992 and 2005 and said he has a special bond with the dictator Kim Jong-Un - whilst his administration has said there is a special place in hell for the Canadian Prime Minister.

What a time we're living in.

The guy cannot do anything right . Taken on its own I think this is a good step - I have visited Korea a few times and I am hopeful this is the start of something special for the peninsula and its people.
