I'm from Manchester, born and brought up here.
Ever since I became aware of politics as a teenager during the early 80's, at the height of the cold war, the astounding hypocrisy of Ronald Reagan spouting off about "freedom and democracy", whilst actively supporting CIA backed terrorists to overthrow the Nicaraguan government elected by its people, or supporting death squads in El Salvador to suppress any form of dissent against it's dictator friends, made me realize that country is full of utter shit.
Absolutely nothing has changed with that country, no matter which party or president has been in charge.
It is a truly evil empire and it astonishes me that more people can't see what I see.
Apologies there is another poster called Eagle something who’s Bosnian.
No offence but I would say your awareness of politics is too simplistic.
I’ll try and keep it simple to explain why you’re being a bit naive...
The US, during the height of the Cold War, was trying to stop communism sweeping across the globe. You know that political stance that saw millions of people die in poverty. They took very hard lines in certain areas such as those that you mentioned, some the right thing to do at the time and some the wrong.
The fact is when two super powers are enemies, even the seemingly good guys will have to do bad things to win. It’s just a fact of war. We did it by fire bombing Dresden to deter German moral and within any war innocent people are affected in the worst ways.
The US isn’t an empire, they can be accused of poking into business that isn’t there’s a sometimes too much and sometimes getting that wrong but they’re not out conquering other nations to add to the United States, as an empire would.
