World Cup 2018 | 24th June | England vs Panama Match Thread, KO 13:00 (BST)

Yup, it is weird to say after a 6-1 demolition, but I really don't think we played very well in open play and the system is the biggest reason. We just abandon the middle of the park, Henderson joins the back 3 and then we just play it around the back 6 pretty aimlessly, until Trippier decides to put one in the channel for the ever willing Lingard. Both games have been the same, but we're so dangerous from set pieces that it's kind of papered over the cracks. Kane is getting praise, as he's scored 5 goals, but he's barely had a kick in open play and it's not remotely his fault that that's the case.

Moving Sterling back into the midfield seems like such an obvious fix as well, but we seem to be persisting with this system.
I’m not sure what formation Southgate is playing. The three at the back is really a back five as both the wing backs appear really unsure about crossing the half way line. The two midfielders are so far apart, with Henderson in the middle and Loftus Cheek out on the right wing, it basically creates a one-man midfield. Henderson isn’t that good that he can cover all that space and get the ball to the front two. Thus you get a situation where Sterling didn’t touch the ball for the first 26 minutes and then Vardy touched the ball maybe once in 25 minutes. As has been said above, the dead ball situations are really papering over the cracks. When we play a decent team we will have to reinforce the midfield.

Psychedelic Casual said and BigOscar, both great posts.

Much needed perspective in addition to the little fact of Panama's current world ranking 55.

The old ‘he did nothing but score’ f*ck me this gets irritating- kane is world class and we’re lucky to have him.

Two well-taken penalties and a fluked goal. No one is saying he did nothing or that he's not world-class but lingard outperformed him from open play in the game. If MOTM was just for goals then even stones was more deserving than him

Think you misunderstood him mate. He meant that it would have been the icing on the cake and would have given Raheem a boost. He wasn't slagging him off.

Bollox if he wAnts to say it was a great performance just say everyone played well and contributed. 6 1 we won. It was a dig. He is a twat

Good to see plenty of perspective on here, I agree with a lot of what’s been said.

I actually wish I’d been at the game so I could have had a view of the whole pitch rather than just what the camera was showing. I was very confused by us sticking Loftus-Cheek out on the right wing whilst at times Raz was picking the ball up alongside Henderson - surely Raz should be out wide with Loftus-Cheek central? When Alli plays he doesn’t get asked to play out to the side so I don’t understand what that tactic today was all about.

I have to admit that Lingard is looking good, and also agree about Kane, fucking hilarious he’s top scorer at the World Cup when he’s literally contributed jack shit from open play - can’t argue with 5 goals though!

If it's just one mention then fair enough. But it seems like every comment, especially by Shearer, has to mention his lack of goals. It's tedious and I am entitled to comment on it. Bear in mind, he was doing an immediate post-match summary of a fantastic ALL ROUND performance by England. In the right context, it's a fair criticism of Raheem in an England shirt, but to home in on one player only and to draw attention to him is, as I say, tedious.
No it isn't.

Considering England scored 6 and Raheem, being a centre forward and needing a goal.......Shearer pointing out that fact was worthy of conversation,as it's relevant.

As others have said, 6-1 win papers over the cracks massively. The midefield is utterly none existent, and over 2 games, Henderson, Alli, Loftus-Cheek have offered nothing either defensively (not really need to) or offensively.

Watching City under Pep has shown that just scoring goals isn't good enough for a forward, and despite having 5 goals already, Kane is offering very very little in terms of movement, holding the ball up, or bringing others into the game.

The back line is fine I feel, but the wing backs, Young specifically, aren't offering the threat going forward - and Tripper's delivery is his best asset atm.

Sterling and kane need to have a love child. Kane does fuck all but has an eye for goal. Sterling is fantastic on the field but couldnt hit a barn door with a banjo.

The team looks good as is. No need to tinker. I thought stones was motm and i thought Rose looked dreadful for the few minutes he was on.

With a bit of luck and good management from GS we can do well.
