Media persecution of Raheem Sterling

Current topic on Talksport......................................has Sterling done enough to stay in the team? its become an obsession with media.
Don't think he has done enough really. He looks like a fish out of water in the role he has been shoehorned into. Raheem needs space to attack he would be brilliant playing for some of the counter attacking sides playing in a wide role. Indeed he would probably do better as part of the English 3 rather than loitering around further up the pitch rather ineffectively in the main. The thing is when you give a dog a name it tends to stick. He would need to be scoring in every game before he gets a good press which is very unfair. Also if he plays when England lose he will almost certainly be the fall guy. He would be better off packing his bags doing a Roy Keane and get ready for his real job starting in August.

Working with a Portsmouth fan today asked him if he watched the game, first thing out of his mouth ‘Sterling is shit’ asked him for justification and not a peep, the press have done their work well

Maybe i havnt watched Englands games well enough, but i would have thought that in the position he was given Sterling would be allowed to roam a lot towards the flanks to provide assists from there or try to infiltrate close to the backline and opponents goal, this with support of Walker and Rose. I didnt notice him roaming so much as i thought he would.

At one point yesterday in the pub, someone errupted in anger as Sterling miscontrolled it and it went out of play for a goal kick. This numpty was shouting how Sterling was shit, shouldn't be anywhere near the team. The camera focussed in on Sterling and to his utter dismay it was actually Lingard. Turned to his mates and made a 'wooooops' type gesture and shut up quickly. Just goes to show people want him to do badly just so they can jump on him.

I mentioned this the other day, this is the type of role he should have in that set up but too often he's finding himself with his back to goal trying to hold the ball up to bring others into play.

What he should be doing more often or have a licence to do more often is what he did for Lingard's goal, dropped deep and interchanged passes with the centre backs which worked a bit of space on the left, he then sprinted to the edge of the box where he was on hand to lay the ball off for Lingard in the one two, this is Sterling at his best, linking up play when he has the freedom to do it.

Southgate is playing Sterling and Walker in ways Pep Wouldn't. Kyle Walker is never a centre half and should be playing right back and getting past Sterling up the touchline, I fear for what might happen to England when they have to come up against a striker that might carry a goal threat as they havent had that test yet. Sterling needs to be stood on the touchline and running into space. He hasnt had that opportunity so far and I think he is playing too close to kane and playing against a back six like the last couple of games, he did look lively yesterday and was in the right places. If England play against a team that dominates possession he could really come into his own as an out ball.

I was in Market Rasen for the game yesterday, courtyard of the pub has TV's outside, flags, party atmosphere etc.

Now usually when I'm there it's pretty quiet in the village and pubs but was heaving yesterday with what seemed to be half of the 659m raggy know nowt fans.

As I ordered my beer another customer asked the bar staff the team as he'd just walked in.....was not pleased Raz won the Sterling v Rashford battle, others grumbled as well.

I decided to wander round to see if this was the norm even though I could guess it was the case.

Spoke to 3 groups of lads 18-30, a total of 14 guys, none had a good word to say about Raz and all wanted Rashford to start, all tripped out the media shit about Raz.

I got Pope into the conversation not one of the 14 had any idea who he played for Soton & Wolves the main replies.

The media have done their job on Sterling, the man in the street with his head in the sand has decided he's shit and without the press having a change of direction it's not going to change.
Exactly. he cannot win this battle. Been saying it for a while the best thing he can do (As bad as it will be received) is to retire. The press might be getting s bit of backlash for their shit, but they have managed to shape the thoughts of the nation on Sterling. Not only is he IN the team but he is keeping Rashford OUT of the team which is unforgivable..... He will never ever get the fans behind him and his best bet imo is to retire and give the reason of too much negative press around the team because of him... which no one can deny

Stirling is a great player in any team that can exploit his movement. He needs space to run at defenders and midfielders that can pick up his runs and execute precision passes. In his current role in the England team he has neither and is adopting more of a playmaker role, occasionally with considerable success (like his assist to Lingard and multiple assists in the qualifiers). I'm not sure he will ever do enough for the masses that are not interested in understanding how top level football is played. Southgate obviously rates him and that is all that matters.

I am a big fan of Raheem's and it is tedious that the default option for most fans is to give him the lowest rating. It speaks volumes that in the face of such a wall of negativity from media and England fans that he remains positive and contributes to the team's success. Its clear the rest of the squad hold him in high regard as well as the manager and you'd think that that fact alone would quieten the dissenters (not to mention the fact that the team is winning!).

However, for an attacking player, he does need to score more. Its a fact that even his strongest supporters (and no doubt himself) will know. I hope he plays against Belgium and scores - I think he needs it

couldn't care less if southgate rates him, pep rates him that's all that matters to me

Yeah tottaly, and it would be a good aproach vs Belgium seeing as our left wing has its vulnerabillety, though with more infiltration rather than high crosses taking Belgiums aerial presence in the back in mind and Englands tactic to throw numbers in the box on an attack.

As a Belgian i have some fear of Sterling, he could be a real handfull for us, more so i would think than other players, atleast taking our vunerable left wing in mind. Sterling has the skill to infiltrate there and England has really good fullbacks to support this.

I watched the Tunisia game in a pub near with a dozen or so members of the Tampa British Club (a facebook group I joined but haven't been to any events they organise). A work colleague came too and we sat away from the group but near enough to hear their ramblings. The vast majority were cockney type spivs, and when I was at the bar every thing they said was "quality mate" and the kids they had were draped in flags and face paint.
Biggest cheer of the day wasn't the 2 goals but when Sterling was subbed. Couldn't believe that 4,000 miles away these pricks had swallowed the media shit. Yet they must have been watching City games on NBC week in and week out to see what a "quality mate" player he has been.
Watched the game at work yesterday but I'm off on Thursday - night go along again and cheer Belgium on vocally....

Funnily enough Rasen itself has gone downhill since we started going there 12 or so years ago but I was looking around Spilsby & Alford for property & environment as we quite fancy moving over to the Lincs area in 12/18 months.
