Media persecution of Raheem Sterling

Jack Wilshere was constantly scrutinized, hounded and destroyed by the press for a good while until he dropped off the radar. How does his situation differ?
Never seen him scrutinised by the press to the same extent, can you provide any examples?

As much as Sterling? By the press and England fans?

It didn't continue as long as Sterling has been subjected to,maybe due to his constant injury taking him out of the spotlight, but yes,he was constantly followed around for a period with every aspect of his life scrutinized.

The sterling agenda has been going on nearly three years. This year even though wiltshire has been out half the season, there was a media clamour to tryto get him back in the england team for the world cup, at the same time the media were stoking the fire about sterling not going to the world cup because of tattoogate. Jack has been treated badly, but fuck me nothing in comparison to sterling, where the nation have adopted biased and unfair views towards sterling.

hes got Liverpool and united fans slagging him off that is a sizeable following on social media ,the more people who say he's playing shit the more other people will take it in rather than look like they don't know what they are on about ,look at the player ratings on the bbc ,sterling gets a 4 most of the time , that's because rags and Liverpool pretty much outnumber most other fans world wide ,it isn't going to change until it has too ,and sterling needs to score a winning goal in the semi or the final for it to stop.

I'll be watching Wednesday's game in a small village on the south coast near Worthing, be interesting to see what reception Raheem receives from the 'East Preston Massive'.

Cheers man. That's all I'm doing here. I know many have made their minds up before I've even typed a letter. But if you don't push back there is no chance in hell that your going to be able to reset the narrative.

Its exactly what were up against. Its gonna take time, just got to keep pushing back.

I am loving this..i just mentioned that england went to shit when rashford and vardy came on, he has replied they were instructed to lose the game ????

You cant make it up, comedy gold this one

Mate your lucky. I've been in arguments with good friends and one or two family about this. The maddest thing for me is people I have known for years, nearly word for word regurgitating the same lazy media soundbites about sterling. Its like fox news have taken over the football fan base when it comes to sterling.

As i conceded,it wasnt to the same degree but there were definite similarities in their treatment.Wilshere was often regarded as a 'scrote who got lucky' who like Sterling, often gave the press ammunition with his off field adventures,he,like Sterling again, and was seen as an easy target as a result.
As for a 'clamour' for reinstatement,hardly.....but what there was,i think was more to do with desperation in regards a lack of anything approaching his ability when fit and firing.

How do you think it will go? Just like anywhere else, I would imagine.

It's rag country down there. My former son-in-law was from Sussex.

Seems to be a fairly co-ordinated "support Raheem" campaign in the press over the past few days.

Whether a few favours are being called in by the FA or one or two journo's have started talking about the positives and others are jumping on the bandwagon it's long overdue that he's had support From the press.

went into work this morning, armchair rag slopes over to me, I though here we go. He said "I think I was being too critical of Sterling previously, He had a good game on saturday, I appreciate his work rate off the ball more now" Well my jaw dropped to the floor!!! I can only assume that because they are highlighting his efforts more after the match and bigging him up on T.V. that that's the reason for the turn around.

True there are similarities. They were on him had lens and all if he craft fag. The media did make a run all the same to get him into the team and they only stopped when he got injured at the end of the season. The other thing is that he has been one of those players who has excelled in reputation the longer he has been out. Sterling at no time since kind of aleaving Liverpool has enjoyed the same kind of adulation. If and when he's received praise its been through gritted teeth or accompanied by a negative. He scores three oh it should have been five though, that kind of shit.

There's a difference though. One was touted as England's saviour in this World Cup, first few group games he was the solution to all their problems. The other had a crowd funding campaign started to get him home early from the last Euros. No comparison. Wheelchair gets the Rooney treatment where he might get personal criticism but God save you if you question his starting position, Sterling, the manager's judgement gets questioned for starting him, right up until he breaks all expectations and becomes the joint second best English manager of all time. Then Sterling gets a break and the 'he should have picked Wheelchair' noise dies off.

The difference between press criticism of Wilshire and Sterling is that Wilshire gets criticised for being unprofessional (smoking etc), Sterling gets criticised for shopping, eating breakfast etc.

The last time Sterling really did anything off field that warranted more than a passing comment he was still at Liverpool.
