Should I remind you what happened the last time the usual United last-minute link happened? In fact, the last two times?

If he comes, he comes. If he doesn't then we find a replacement as good or better, if not this summer then the summer after. We're not desperate, we can wait. The most important thing is that whoever comes is the right player of the right quality and not a buy just for the sake of it.

Agree. I'm honestly not overly arsed about this deal. I realise Yaya needs to be replaced but if its not Jorginho im sure we will sign someone else who can do the role just as well.

We need to improve the squad not just replace. Having said that, just about anyone would improve us over what Yaya could have offered this year

What replacements have you in mind?

The ball is in Jorginho's court, if he wants to play for the best team in the country, develop under the best coach in football and perform on the biggest stage (champions league), then he'll force his way to City.

If all he cares about is money, let him go to the chavs.

Just because City can pay more doesn't mean they should. If the player agreed to come then he should honor that, if not then we move on.

I'm not saying that, as I have no insight into Chelsea's own business. I'm saying we have trodden a very well-worn path when it comes to these protracted will he won't he sign?

They invariably do, barring a certain type of character.

Txiki certainly didn't strike me as being too concerned on the Inside Video yesterday, nor Pep, who is the man he has to please.
Invariably except for Alves and Alexis in the last twelve months. Add Fred to the list as well per Sammy Lee

And this formula has always worked well for Pep, recruit players who he values & who want to play for him and not chase those who covet the big payday above all else

If Jorginho comes, great. If not, Pep will identify another target that will ultimately be a more ideal fit in the end. Trust in Pep

We pulled the plug on Fred in February, once we established Jorginho talks, even Fred's own agents were telling the Brazilian press pack they had heard nothing else back from us.

Sammy is wrong on that one. In actual fact, we had teed up the Fred deal in January but Pep put his foot down on Laporte, not wanting to trust Vinny injury issues.

As for Sanchez, Soriano had Xmas lunch with some selected members of the press in the Tunnel Club.

It was made clear even in mid December that we would not be dragged to the table on Sanchez, and would only be prepared to sign him on a free this summer.

We also wanted to make Arsenal pay for messing us around last summer.

Sanchez just wanted out, so those players you cite, barring Alves, we had long left the field clear to United.

That goes for RVP too. We bid £14m and wouldn't go any higher.

so with that in mind then surely we aren`t going to put this deal at risk?

Love the way you’re all so relaxed about losing him to Chelsea. There was a reason Pep has targeted him all summer long and it would be a real blow to lose him

So if we do sign him and Mahrez you will then be elated?

Tolmie any idea what is happening is it the piano player part 2

The way I see it, is Napoli are doing what any seller would sensibly do, try and get the best price for their asset. They have an offer from us and they were given encouragement that if Chelsea could sort their managerial situation out, that they would bid too. In that case Napoli would be well within their rights to see who was going to bid the most. Its pretty simple really.

That's fair enough on those examples, I just disagree on this approach. If Jorginho is our target, just close the deal already. In our fortunate position the hard work is identifying the player, vetting his personality and fit for the system, and agreeing personal terms. There aren't many players that will tick all those boxes and who will be an upgrade to the squad and we found one!

We've been speaking to Napoli for months at this point and we're down to negotiating over very fine margins. Expecting the player to step in at this point when he has another option and do the dirty work is foolish in my opinion (and we've seen that it doesn't always work). Most players in Jorginho's situation want the move, and want Manchester City, but they would also go to a few other clubs as well if push came to shove. That's normal, and great players are always going to have competition for their signature. Are we only going to go for players we have a clear run at from now on? What do we gain out of this besides some sort of principle? We still spend a ton of money, it's just slightly more arbitrary now, and sometimes we'll miss out on players we want to rivals.

Absolutely this! I’m very ‘old skool’ City. And used to be a typical ‘glass half empty’ pessimist where all things City are concerned. But I’ve, without even realising, became ‘the worm that turned.’ I really don’t give a flying fxxk what Chelsea, the Scum or any of the ‘Underlings’ do. We are so far ahead, they’re going to struggle to catch up even if we stand still, let alone overtake us! And those of you slating our hierarchy need to give your heads a wobble and dry your fannies!
