Leroy Sane - 2018/2019 performances

Toni Kroos has been a bit critical of Sane in the press conference ahead of Germany's game with France tomorrow:

The evidence would suggest it's fair comment from Kroos.

I’m not sure it’s entirely fair as I recall Sane really driving at Liverpool in the 4-3 match last season long after it seemed like a lost cause.

Just because someone has a laidback demeanor doesn’t mean they aren’t determined to succeed.

I hope we're going to see a big reaction to all this from him.

Having your professionalism, fitness, maturity & desire to win questioned and finding yourself not even on the bench should light a massive fire under him to shut people up.

He hasn't said that though,he has simply hinted at the fact that his approach can sometimes be less than 100%.

Sane is an incredible talent and if he chooses not to fully apply himself in every aspect of his footballing education then he will not fulfill his potential, and that will be a shame for the game.

Hopefully such comment can help make the penny drop.

Kroos isn't exactly a nobody though right? Been playing at the top level for the last decade and won four CL's, if he's calling Leroy out in public it's probably something worth listening to.

Wrote in the All or Nothing thread earlier this morning:

"- Only player that I feel that something is not quite right with, is Sane. He feels very absent in the dressing room, made faces at Pep and now, knowing that both Loew and Pep has axed him in team selections recently, it worries me that his head is not there. The talent undoubtedly, but does he have the grit to mature and become even better? Time will tell."

Pep, Loew and now Kroos can't all possibly be wrong. There has always been moments where you feel that he is lethargic, even on the pitch, but they seem to be more frequent now and the minutes he played against Wolves were horrible.

We all know that Sane was axed because he failed a drug test. That`s what Stephen Howson said. Must be right then

Not all kids are mature at his age, seems he needs to focus although he did ok last season,he does have that relaxed style about him not to be confused with lazy,i don't think he is that

He's also played with Ronaldo, Ribery, Robben etc. He knows what great but arrogant wingers are like and should be able to tell the difference between looking a bit laid back on the pitch, and actually being laid back in your approach.

I don't think it's laziness, more a lack of focus at times, he can sometimes appear to be coasting in games but then out of nowhere he can turn it on and be devastating.

I agree,i love it when he suddenly turns on the after burners and powers past everyone, bit like yaya in that way,he is a very exciting player, after winning last season pep did say he would be getting tougher on them,it must be hard to keep players of all ages motivated, they have the silverware and the money i guess its easy to lose some focus

He has the talent to have the careers they've had but he has to put in the work and dedication they did and at 22 he has to do it now.

I absolutely love this guy and think he has all the attributes and potential to become a superstar under Pep’s tutelage. But I’ve always had this strange, nagging doubt about the level to which he’s bought into the ‘Pep way’ (for the want of a better phrase), no evidence, just a worrying feeling that, of all Pep’s signings, he seems a little more detached than the others and may still not be fully settled here. Of course there are all manner of personalities and temperaments in the squad (I don’t expect him to be a complete extrovert like Mendy) and individual players will respond differently to the pressures put on them by Pep’s fierce demands but there does appear to be something ‘missing’ from him. I may be way off target here and hope I am. I’d love nothing more than to see him back from this round of international matches, head in the right place, fully focused and ready to fight for his place in the starting line-up and to strike fear again into opposition defences.

One of the very best young players in the world last year being nicely lined up as this years whipping boy I see.

Sane is a raw talent still - but he has tremendous upside potential.

Pep will get the best out of him.

On the left this year we have some issues.

Mendy is great going forward and has an amazing cross - but he's obviously very poor on defense.

Last year, we played Sane wide left to very good effect - Sane would storm down the line and deliver a killing cross - or would cut in and beat one or more opponents on the way to goal.
===
What I'd like to see is this - as an experiment.

Start Mendy as left winger - so he doesn't have to defend as much.

If Sane starts at the same time, let him play left "full back" - but start a back 3. That way, Sane can play aggressively but a bit more central with Mendy hugging the left side line. Sane is still dangerous at left back/mid, because he's excellent at beating men one-on-one - better than Mendy - and, he can interchange with Mendy if the occasion merits to confuse defenses.

Hopefully he comes back from his national squad rejuvenated. I think people are underestimating the effect not going to the World Cup had on the kid. Yes, most of us would say we would come back hungrier and wanting to prove themselves more than ever, but the reality is we've never been in his position/ have no clue what that did to him, mentally.

I think Pep is sometimes very hard on players with his personal management so I hope that it's something Sane is able to deal with as I would love for him to be a main player of our squad going forward.

He always takes a while to get up to speed, but it is little worrying

Needs to pick himself up because his best is arguably the best of anyone we have...the kid is an absolutely fantastic footballer
