Virgin Broadband

well we're up and running with virgin, sort off.

Am only getting 40mbps, whilst I understand the 200mbps I'm supposed to be getting is a max speed surely 40 is not right?

Also having an issue with the laptop, regardless or wired or wireless connection to the new network it says limited and doesn't actually work. Mobiles are fine with the Wi-Fi though.

Seriously, sometimes there's a bit of jiggery pokery done by Virgin to tweak your speed, they say. I'd give them a ring anyway and see what the score is. Hope you're fluent in Hyderabadese.
 
They have an excellent product but appalling service. They won't allow you to contact them by email and their social media staff cannot access your account. I am currently in dispute with them as my service has not worked properly since April. When I raised the complaint they gave me free access until the problem was resolved. Then, when they couldn't resolve it quickly, they withdrew their offer, leaving me to then repeatedly contact them with no return calls allowed by the majority of their staff. It is, of course, deliberately engineered against the customer in the hope that you will give up.
 
I've never had a bad CS experience with Virgin, I use their suport forums, and generally an admin PMs you and gets more details, then organises an engineer visit.

That said, I've only had to do that twice in all the time I've been with them

Thought only BT spoke that. I'm sure VM boasts mainland call centres, which I took to be UK, and not the subcontinent.
 
Currently for Virgin broadband vivid 100 and had no issues with it. Cost has just gone from 30 to 48 a month and thats way too much for broadband. Phoned them, said they would knock 2 pounds a month off. Currently doing black friday deal for new customers on the same package for £27 a month.

Question is, if i cancel, are virgin any good for coming back with a decent offer? If not, has anyone ever cancelled and then re signed up under say my wifes name?

Wife's name works fine the sales staff don't care, you might have downtime though as it is a full disconnect and then an activation.

Just recently moved over to Virgin from Sky. I only really noticed the difference in speeds when downloading Playstation games and patches, other than that it is no different really when using your phone and general surfing. I have a referral or two for new customers that I can spare if you need.

Biggest differences between Sky and Virgin I would say are on the TV side, Virgin's setup looks very dated comperd to Sky's (think Ceefax), you have to work harder to find programmes you may want to watch as no (or a poor and incoherent) 'if you liked this then try this too' feature, (it just seems to want to record nonsensical stuff like the news or bob the builder on my behalf even if I give it the thumbs down and delete it) and for some bizzare reason they decided to design a remote control that will always roll off any flat surface. So don't even think of putting it on the arm of your chair if you don't like retrieving batteriers and plastic covers continually.

The Virgin box boots up from standby faster however, and is generally faster to search, which may be in part thanks to the broadband but I feel is more down to the box itself being able to process faster than my old Sky HD box. I would also say the HD is sharper than I experienced wth Sky.

Oh, and I also had an almost show stopping problem with Virgin blocking VPNs, which they don't directly admit, but was fixed by some tweaking otheriwse I'd have been cancelling within the 14 day cool off.

The v6 box is fast, had to be changed as the old tivos were causing to many fault calls for how slow they were.

Bit of advice...my £10 loyalty discount has just finished for internet only putting it upto 36 a month..on the initial phone call do I ask to be put threw to cancellations and hope for the retentions call within the month or try my arm and say sky have offered me a lower speed which I'm not bothered about but for 25 a month...any advice would be much appreciated

Used to have a £7.50 loyalty discount but when I spoke to India I was told that had finished and "broadband is very expensive". I resisted the temptation to say, no shit Sherlock.

It's also a complete joke when they keep telling me I am getting a free speed upgrade, only to start charging me for it shortly after.

I was quite happy with my 50mbs and have no need for the 100mbs. Fair enough if it was free but the nearly 70% price increase over 18 months says differently.

I'm convinced most people pay for d/load speed they don't need. It's like being able to afford a Ferrari but only ever using it to drive to the nearest Tesco Metro. 50mbs should be plenty for even a busy household. Reliability, wifi within the home and upload speeds (if home working) are much more important.

If you can get that speed using non Virgin services, I'd explore that route, even if it's just to use as a bargaining chip.

Is the retentions dept the same as cancellations?

Yes mate. Call the 03454541111 with your account number and area code. When through to India insist that you need to speak to retentions to renegotiate your bill and that you have done that in the past. Then they will transfer you.

Result...just rang using same layman's as yourself....currently on the 200 vivid broadband only...stayed on the 200 but got it down from £45 a month to £26.50 on 12 month contract...what a splendid company Branson has built himself
