Not true at all - there is an online form to cancel your TV licence, you can even request a refund for the last year if you have a valid reason. The condition is that you stop watching broadcast TV, and don't use i-player. Both of which they have no legal way to check.....

I’ve already cancelled. I get lots of vaguely threatening letters now.
