Game of Thrones (season 8)

@7evens Crypt foreshadowing...

Helm’s Deep was filmed at night yet it was totally clear. I think the (intentionally) low lighting was greatly compounded by the near-zero visibility snowstorm that followed the walkers. I watched it at night on an older LCD but I’m going to re-watch on my backlit 4k LED with the picture set on gaming mode rather than movie mode and see how that fares.

I watched it early Monday morning, then again Monday evening, with the TV brightness settings on full, which helped.

Overall an epic episode but it was sometimes difficult to distinguish what was happening in some scenes, with the swirling snow, darkness etc. - like when the dragons were fighting. I'd give it a solid 8.5/10.

Looking forward to watching the remainder of the season, but already beginning to feel sad the series is coming to an end.

720p? I'll probably be dead by the time it's done anyway.
Is it the 2.3GB torrent? That's the one that I watched and it's not amazing quality. Watch it in a dark room and it'll be watchable though. I'm currently downloading the 1080p 5GB file, which might be better.

ETA: Just downloaded it and there's not a massive difference. I think both are probably better than the streams most people were watching. HBO apparently have one of the worse bandwidths and everyone was watching at the same time.

Why do people crave the death of characters? Why would it be more enjoyable?
I think it's more that it's slightly unrealistic given the amount of time they spent in completely hopeless situations that they all survived. But yeah, in previous seasons deaths were shocking but they were always the result of a poor decision the characters made, so it never felt gratuitously shocking for the sake of it.

That's fair comment as 'in reality' more,if not all....would have perished. However, having them survive does allow for character involvement in the climax most weren't initially expecting.Ep 3 was almost a red herring in terms of the show closure.

One question

Will the land of eternal winter return to the sunnier green and pleasant land seen in the craation of the NK flashback ?

If so that is a shitload of land and fuck knows what beyond, for all we know their could still be CotF living even beyond there up north.

I say fuck cersei leave down south waiting on an attack.
See out the winter, which will probably subside now the dead are done in and start a new kingdom in a larger north.

People complaining about lighting lol. The whole point of it was to feel like you was there scared dark having some horde attack you, it was the long night not the long day. Your own fault for buying shit black Friday tvs
Yeah I thought it was deliberate, night battles are meant to be confusing and disorienting.

Pity none of it went on lighting!!!

When you go to the cinema the lights go out for a reason.

The cinema setting in modern TV sets is naturally dark for deep blacks as intended by the directors.

So curtains and blinds closed, all lights off and sit back and enjoy.

It really is that simple to enjoy it as the director intended.

I have an OLED...those TVs eat blacks for fun, but even with this expensive tv, it was about half a stop to a full stop underexposed to not make the eyes bleed.

Thought the episode was very impressive, but a bit lacking in the plot. I feel like the number of surviving named characters was a bit unrealistic, and a lot of it seemed to go the obvious way.

Preferred the battle of the bastards and even Dany annihilating the train from Highgarden to King's Landing.

I definitely agree with the lighting. There were times where it was just impossible to make out what was going on.

There definitely needed to be more deaths, the two Mormont deaths were great, but I'm not having that Samwell Tarly could have survived, same with Greyworm and even Denaerys at the end.

I think because despite the dragons, walking dead and spells, we crave a touch of realism.

You're not telling me
Samwell fucking Tarly would have survived that battle, he's a joke.

Thought it was amazing personally, anyone who is having to mess with TV settings to watch it, I feel you are missing the point somewhat... Firstly your TV should always be setup better than the preconfigured modes, you can pretty much youtube for a guide on what settings to change on most TV's and this should be the first thing you do when buying a new TV and secondly, and more importantly... It is meant to be dark, disorientating to the viewer as if you are in the midst of battle! To turn the brightness up completely ruins the production as it was meant to be viewed in my opinion.

Not a prayer, although if we're going down that path, his exit should have been some series back.Take everything with a pinch of salt and just enjoy the ride.

Thought it was an excellent episode and made a lot of sense for a lot of characters. Ser Jorah protecting his khaleesi, Theon getting redemption fully from Bran. I get there could have been more deaths and usually GoT kills characters when they are in situations where death is more than likely. I quite liked that they didn't though and there's still arcs left for a lot of them. GoT not killing them all and not having this as the last in the series is in line what they've done all along - subverting what people expect to happen. As bad as the night king is, the real story for a lot of them is still to end.

Arya killing the night king made complete sense too and has been telegraphed throughout - it's always been about her relationship with death. The scene with her in the library was fantastic, it was the first time we really saw how quietly she moved (she makes less sound than a drop of blood falling from a couple of feet). The bit at the end when the white walkers hair moved slightly as she went past was great.

Just on the lighting, if you get the settings right, I thought it was really well done and actually very clever, particularly the way they used it (and the absence of it) around the night king.

I think it just needs one scene in the next episode now to show what Bran was really doing and then it will all tie in. The story now shifts and that episode again highlighted the flaws of having either Jon or Dany on the iron throne. The former just has "run into lots of people and hope to survive" as his plan and the latters hot headedness is what caused the battle plans to go completely out of the window (albeit after the daft move of sending the Dothraki!)

It afforded only small snippets of pleasure the way they filmed this spectacular @deadofnight with buckets of fog smog and dry ice continually spewed onto set so that the CGI boys could have the day off. Fast moving zombies and little attention to hand to hand fighting or animation. I guess I was expecting another battle of the bastards on an even grander scale if that was at all possible. Still ok but average to middling throughout.
