There might not be a German candidate or an English candidate.

It might be a race between 2 Lithuanians, a Cypriot and an Irishman. One representing the left, one the centrists, one the right and one the greens.
I ain't voting for the Irishman unless it's Hogan or an Irish Labour candidate.

It would depend on the checks and balances available to counteract the executive powers. I wouldn't want an elective dictator, but I wouldn't want a puppet either.

Perhaps it could be put to a referendum :))
If we were to translate the Irish version of direct democracy to a European level that could work. We still don't elect our Taoiseach though, he's elected by the Dail, although they're no more powerful than the judiciary or the Seanad.

It's all very addictive, isn't it?!
That's putting it mildly. We've never seen anything like this though, it's incredible. (quick side note, just been outside having a cig, chatting to a guy from our IT dept. Had to explain to him that no deal doesn't mean remain. Gobsmacked doesn't come close)

There are a fair few who think that no deal means we go back to normal ie remain. Boy are they in for a shock :)

Reasons for Boris to be cheerful - Engish and Scottish Constitutional law are apparently very different due to the 'poisonous' influence of A C Dicicey on the former. This may result in the Gov appeal being upheld.

I said to my 20 year old lad last week that he should pay attention because people will be talking about these events for decades.

It needs context. Bog standard prorogation for a few days or a week with nothing else going on no one is batting an eyelid. Five weeks with the aim of shutting down a Parliament it can’t win a vote in to save its life and with a crisis point looming then not so much. Add in the fact that Johnson is saying he will ignore the law and you are asking the courts to slap you down.

That said I’m still surprised by the ruling.
It's the correct ruling. If parliament are to be sovereign (given that sovereignty can only be absolute) it should be illegal to suspend parliament without it's consent.

If anyone has the power to do so, then they're sovereign instead of parliament.

Rather than die in a ditch it looks like Johnson has decided the DUP can be dead in a ditch - aside from that being powerful negative symbolism in Ulster though in keeping with Johnsons dreadful language over Brexit it also means the loss of another 10 supporting votes.................how is this a winning strategy?

It's stunning when you think about it. So far Johnson's managed to alienate all the opposition parties and a significant number of traditional Tory one nation MPs, including members of his cabinet and his own brother. He's now moving on to the DUP and the ERG. By the time he's finished, his parliamentary majority will be at about -500. His only supporters will be the geriatric senile membership of the party who probably still think he's doing a great job.

Agreed. But the Supremes may decide that a century old precedent on the absolutism of Parliament needs updating when you have an occupant of No. 10 who seeks to put himself above the rule of law and Parliament.

All to play for.

Leadsom on the government's not publishing Yellowhammer:

I actually do not think that it serves people well to see what is the absolutely worst thing that could happen. The worst thing that could happen to me is I could walk out of here and get run over. It is not a prediction, but it is something that could happen. And simply putting out there all of the possible permutations of what could happen actually just serves to concern people.

That's the worry of there being another people's vote. The vast majority don't understand what's going on.

I couldn't believe it. He's a bright guy, chat to him about politics, footie etc and then he dropped that bomb shell. How the fuck can you mistake no-deal for remain?
