New York

We were in New York in January a few years ago and had heavy snow one night, the kind that would close the U.K. down. Oh deary me we fretted, will our flight out in two days time be delayed? Ha. New York laughs in the face of 6inches of snow. As you say, it was clear the next morning and the City continued at its relentless pulsating pace. Absolutely amazing city. The boat on the Hudson was particularly good under clear blue skies but biting cold. Rockefeller building is the best tall building to go to the top of. We stayed a couple of blocks from Time Square. Don’t bother with the open top bus tours, because of traffic you will find yourself parked most of the time. Food brilliant everywhere. If you are a movie buff check out how many sets you can identify.
Glad you mentioned open bus tours, I was about to ask. I don't normally do them but the one in San Francisco (love that place) was brilliant.

I guess traffic can be an issue, but having done the bus tour, we had a great time. You can hop on/off when you want, and get to see some things you will probably miss if you take the subway to get around. Although, we did this in December one year, and you would need a blanket, gloves, hat, scarf if you plan on doing it during winter!

Yes tyo try NYC, but been to San Francisco a couple of times...absolutely love that city. It energises you and makes England feel very small and reserved...
The bus tour took us over the Golden Gate to Sausalito and the Bay Bridge to Treasure Island. Really glad we did that and would do it again - long lines to get on though. Went in '96 and last year, won't be leaving it that long for next time. Haven't done NYC yet, hopefully next year - late March looks good or April after Easter.

Went on my own the first time stayed with a friend of the family in Oakland (edgy at times!) for two weeks then did a youth hostel for the next two. I got locked out one night after drinking in North Beach (girls were probably involved...). Ended up sleeping rough in an Oakland park.
This was just when the tech boom was really starting (I didn't even have an email address then) and the internet use was emerging (quite an eye opener).
Never felt so alive exploring a city like that on my own. Had a fave bar in NorthBeach (Vesuvio's) and was treated like a king in there - the barman had a mate from Bolton! Had some nice little adventures then but that was over 20 years ago. The city has this weird smell which is quite evocative, Jasmine...I believe it's due to it's location (weather was pretty bizarre)
Would love to go back (and of course NYC).

Especially the food they sell.
Ha ha took my youngest daughter about 10 years agobwhen she was 14 /15 and mostly she ate subway food.
Asked a copper on Times Sq if he knew where the nearest one was and said "right behind you"
"Where?" I asked and he pointed tobthe steps going into the subway....
He hadnt a clue where the nearest food subway was!

Absolutely love NYC. My advice - don't bother visiting the statue of liberty. Waste of time. You spend hours and too much money doing it. Just get the free staten island ferry instead that passes it. The view is perfect for the photos etc. When it stops, immediately get back on the next one and head back to Manhattan for a second view, as there's nowt really on Staten Island. You can spend more time doing the interesting stuff then!

Oh, and go up the Rockefeller, not the Empire state. MUCH better views of Central Park, and you also get the view of the more interesting building - the Empire state :)

Edit - watch a game with the New York Supporters club too if you're there when one is on! They're a good laugh

You don’t want to go back to the states because of one person that you’re likely never to meet? Life’s to short mate for that kind of thinking.

Maybe, but its not just him though is it. He's just the signifier. It's the whole xenophobic, MAGA thing that's going on, not to mention the NRA/gun violence/police brutality/racial segregation stuff that just puts me off the place atm.

Plus there's plenty of other places in the world i'd rather be going to tbh.

I was in Amity Hall for the Palace game, good crowd, good beer and a decent result to top it off, much better than the Mad Hatter imho

Been to both (was at the Mad Hatter for *that* derby, with an Amazon camera crew and blues ordering champagne for everyone at halftime), as we have friends in NYC and go fairly regularly over the past few years, and they both have their strong points. Miss the garden at the Mad Hatter but Amity Hall is a better location in general.

Agree with the comments on going up Rockefeller, try and time it so you are up there at dusk. If it's clear it's fantastic watching the city light up. Also recommend walking the highline which is an old raised railway that they've turned into a park. The last couple of times, we've stayed downtown near ground zero, we prefer it to being in midtown (don't like Time Square, found it tacky) as it's easy enough to get to and from midtown on the subway. If your stay includes a weekend the hotel rates are usually better at that end of town.

Going on Saturday for 7 days , wife and daughter want to go to a Art Museum while myself and son want to watch the Burnley game ( be 3 clock ko over there) . We are staying in Times Square , where is the new City supporters club bar ? Any other suggestions?

I’d love to go to New York. It looks incredible. How much is a beer over there?

Depends on where you go and what you want.

It can literally run anywhere from $4 pints of piss (Pabst, Brooklyn) to $70 750ml bottles of craft imperials (Goose Island, Bourbon County, midtown Manhattan).

A decent ale/lager at a decent establishment will cost about $7-8.
