Bring the Noise

I was on SS level two and was surprised to hear them.

I've always been against drums and megaphones at games and guess what.....I still am! But then again, I'm over 14.

The drum wants sticking where the sun don't shine, say Accrington Stanley or Grimsby F.C.

The megaphone less so, it's just embarrassing and cringy.

Full marks for trying, now stop it off.

Majority of people for it are not that under the age of 14.

The 1894 group etc are doing a magnificent job, the flags, banners, singing section etc. I applaud everything they are doing and have done. I even applaud their attempt to experiment with the drum and megaphone, if it's not trialled then how will they know what response it provokes, both good and bad.

However, I think the drum in particular kills any atmosphere and is just not "City". The megaphone is slightly different, as we know in European grounds it is tediously used throughout the game. If it could be used now and again to gee up the crowd when things get a bit stale then it may have a small place. When the lad spoke into it and faced the pitch I couldn't hear it but when he faced the stand it was quite loud. I was surprised to see a couple of young people on the second tier join into the Guardiola song.

But please, ditch the drum!

Check out the ultras from Palace, Rangers Union Bears & i hate to say Celtics Green Brigade. Drums are used and it works well.

Heck Stockport County have a drum and have done for years, their Cheadle Stand is generally loud.

Good effort but unless there's a massive injustice or it's against the Dippers or United we are a sullen bunch. Maybe it's the weather, being crap for so long of our history, the gallows humour, the feeling that shite is just around the corner etc etc. Last night we could barely raise a clap for Andriy Shevchenko or the lads doing their best on the new stage (The Sherlocks). I'm usually as guilty as the next man but for the first time was embarrassed into clapping.

Not liking, sorry, hating(!) drums at football games is not being an atmosphere snob.

Every single time some set of Euro away fans have come to the Etihad with a drum, or any time I watch a CL game on tele on the nights when City aren’t playing or any time I watch Palace when they’re at home... within five minutes I’m fucking sick to death of hearing the drum.

And it’s not only the incessant smashing fuck out of it that nearly all of them do, it’s the dreadful monotonous boring chanting they do with no words that just drone on and on and on to it “ooooaaaah wooooaaahhh der der der oooaahh wwwoah woah laaa laaa an na na der der wwoaaah”.

And to top it off that stupid US high school cheer leader choreographed clapping they all do where they start with their arms really wide and clap above their head.

I hate it!

When Atalanta came a few months ago they were a breath of fresh air for a set of Euro fans. They sounded brilliant! They had no drum!

They ruined themselves with a drum where we played them away. But they were great at our place.

I feel very very passionately about being anti-percussion at football games. Me and my group of mates can’t stand them.

I know we don’t have all those shit “woah woah” songs with no words but I think I’d we had a drum it wouldn’t be long until they appeared.

I’m all for banners, flags, displays (although I think they sometimes kill the atmosphere as the players come out because people are concentrating on holding things up rather than making noise), smoke bombs, flares, standing up, the Poznań, the Yaya/Kolo... and obviously singing our traditional songs... but we do not need to be just another copycat cheesy Euro bollocks fanbase with no imagination, stooping down to having a drum.

It’s the one thing English fans still have over those Europop Ultras. Yes they are much more consistently louder than English fans, but whenever any set of drumless English fans turn up with a proper atmosphere, we have the best atmospheres in football! There’s no distinguishing between any of them, from Portugal to Russia, they’re all the same - same drum beats, same songs with no words, they’re fucking boring. Yes silence is also boring but when we switch it on, we are great!

We've just got to keep trying to get a bigger singing section away from the away fans in an area where the noise will spread around the stadium well and encourage the rest of the stadium to sing more.

And we’ve got to get the club to stop increasing ticket prices. The amount of fans who’ve left our fanbase because of this sole reason must be huge. I know well over two dozen fans who’ve stopped going due to price increases over the years. A few gave up after Pearce and a few have died (not from being FOCs before you wonder how old I am, one of the lads was 24 when he died) but the rest have been priced out or the continual price increases means they drop out of the Cup Schemes.

A drum isn’t the answer. It’s enough to stop many fans going if we turned into a drum fanbase.

sure they had a drum

Last night was a new low for us as a fan base in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong was a great turnout for what feels like a bit of a dead rubber fixture these days having played them so often.

However, I really do not understand with this fascination of bringing a drum and megaphone. A drum and megaphone put me off singing more than they encourage it. It’s embarrassing and artificial as anything. Yes our atmosphere is poor at times but come on, really? What do you expect against Shakhtar? Might be the last time I bother with these CL group games.

Not even to mention a fella bringing a birthday cake into the South third tier and the club deciding what we really need is some bang average band playing inside the ground.

What happened to going the game with your mates, having a few beers, having a laugh and a sing without all this nonsense of forcing atmosphere?

a bang average band? muhahaha

A good effort from the 1894 lads, at least they are trying - but over in 115 and on the same row as the megaphone & drum, I simply didn't hear what they were singing. I didn't even hear the megaphone until some lads in front of me started shouting towards it.

I sing (badly) every game - some around me sing sporadically and others around me rarely sing, some of them never....I don't think a megaphone/drum or even Tesco vouchers would get those people singing - I oft wonder why some of them moved to the "singing section" during the rejig of seats a few years back.

I thought they were more noticeable and louder by the corner. I remember them having a fall out with the club.

We can still do it when we want, Southampton at home in the second half was a perfect example. It isn't just us though, as others have said other grounds suffer as well.

yes Southampton at home perfect example. It can be done.

Noticed jrb you mentioned palace relocated, I did see on tv that they had around 500 singers in one block and one capo running the songs. He didn't have a megaphone, probably cant afford one ! Joking apart they sounded good and carried on their songs longer, its not rocket science and we know what it takes.

Just as everybody has taken paracetamol now calmed down from the drum, how would fans feel if at the end of this season two thirds of 115 was cleared and made a clean slate. All fans that wanted to go in the area ( or stay in there ) had to re apply in some sort of organised way to guarantee all are season card holders and singers. Before everybody calls me a c*** any singers and hard core city fans already in 115 like us lot would be guaranteed a place. We would go through this exercise purely to move out non singers and day trippers. Day trippers out and singers in SS3 / Kippax and any other areas could move in.

This has never been mentioned before, but as a starting point what are the thoughts or can somebody come up with a different plan ?

I think we all know what it takes, rather than going round in circles lets have a new plan.

The megaphone I think works and makes more people join in. Keep taking that to games.

Change the culture in the stands. As it’s non existent right now. The traditional English culture doesn’t exist anymore other then the odd game

For all the negative comments on here, the indisputable fact is that plenty more fans joined in when the megaphone was used, whereas when it wasn't it was fucking hard work getting any chants going from the front of 116.

500-1,000 dedicated singers all grouped together and and sticking with it is what is required. If it is more so much the better. I am in 119 and we have a fair few of us sing and participate here. A few where I am, a group at the back and some to my left. We still have too many lifeless people sprinkled amongst us though. There are a couple of young women in the same seats in front who fetch books to the game. One was like a notepad/exercise book and she was writing in it one game, no idea what that was all about! Probably turn into a book about how sexism still exists at football games or something in a few years time lol.

As most of you will know in Europe the Capo is normally on a platform or on and elevated ledge facing the fans. That is how the chant is carried to the fans.

That isn’t happening over here due to H@S regulations, ground regulations, etc.

So the alternatives are front, back, or middle of the block. Ideally the middle would be perfect, but seats are already taken. The back is worth a go, but not under the overhang. And standing in and round the disabled section isn’t allowed. The only leaves the front, where we stood last night.

Hopefully if the megaphone is used again, and 1894 continue to be sensible with it, and continue to use the megaphone correctly, as the club have requested, in time, the club may allow 1894 and the megaphone to move over to block 115, but to have the megaphone located at the front left corner of 115, facing the pitch, closer to, and at the bottom of the official 115 singing block?

If the NS doesn’t get expanded or it’s put on hold, then they only way the atmosphere will improve is if safe standing is brought in and SSL1 is made safe standing. The club will have to reconfigure the seats, and that gives the club an opportunity to create a proper singing section. Fans will have to apply for new seats, as their old ones will no longer exist. This gives the club, 1894, and fans who want to sing an opportunity to create, and to be part of a genuine and new singing section in SSL1.
