Bring the Noise

Last night was a new low for us as a fan base in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong was a great turnout for what feels like a bit of a dead rubber fixture these days having played them so often.

However, I really do not understand with this fascination of bringing a drum and megaphone. A drum and megaphone put me off singing more than they encourage it. It’s embarrassing and artificial as anything. Yes our atmosphere is poor at times but come on, really? What do you expect against Shakhtar? Might be the last time I bother with these CL group games.

Not even to mention a fella bringing a birthday cake into the South third tier and the club deciding what we really need is some bang average band playing inside the ground.

What happened to going the game with your mates, having a few beers, having a laugh and a sing without all this nonsense of forcing atmosphere?

Fair play to 1894 group, without them the atmosphere would be flatter than a witches tit.

The way forward I think is to allow roving tickets allocated to a block, not a particular seat as it is now. That way fans who want to sing can bunch up and not feel alienated and embarrassed to start songs going. Would be great when the proposed NS extension happens and the club allow a roving approach. Can't see it happening though.

Its a fair shout that, wonder if it would ever get a trial where by one block you just got a ticket and went anywhere you wanted in that section. We have mentioned it before and it was frowned upon, got the no no from a security point of view as it would be difficult to trace what fan was where during the game. I think at first the answer would be no if we asked, but the megaphone was given the thumbs down for many years so who knows.

The north stand expansion is clearly on the back burner, cant see anything happening for at least 5 years.

Most CL nights you see a lot of new faces, come the knock out stages regular fans seem to come back. We had a block of 40 or 50 fans in 116 last night, there was a guy and his girlfriend some how in the middle of us that nobody knew. I explained to them it was going to get rowdy and noisy, turned round during the game and they where joining in with the songs !

Next CL home game we are reserving 100 seats, double the amount we had last night. Please anybody wanting to boost the noise move in with us. If 40 made a small difference last night then 100 can boost it even further. The drum will have a rest for the next game, so any fans with a drum phobia need not worry :)

Some of the problems we have is that the repertoire of songs we have is so small these days. Fed up of hearing the same three of four every game. The other issue of course is that once a song has been sung once then everyone just gives up. In Europe the same song is sung ad nauseam for about 5/10 minutes and the place is bouncing. We may not like all the choreography that goes with it but a lot of European teams are literally singing for 90 minutes regardless of how well or badly the team is doing. Go to an away game and the concourse is bouncing, go into the seats and it's quiet. The other issue is that if you have 200 people in one large group all willing to sing nonstop then others will join in. However at City those 200 are split up by day trippers and tourists who just want to post instagram pictures and shine a torch - WTF was that about last night. Watch the game and get behind the lads, not video the game, text your mates and take pictures, it's that simple

Can't see it being 5 years until the expansion happens surely.
Wasn't the main reason for the expansion to make the stadium to be suitable to host the champions league final, should we ever apply to host it.

Drum and megaphone is not for me at all.

English football atmosphere is what it is - playing a team from Ukraine for the third season in a row where the players under performed in a game that ultimately does not matter was never going to be good. I'm sure next Saturday it will be absolutely rocking. I've been involved with something similar to 1894 in the past so I applaud your efforts but changing fan culture is a very difficult thing to achieve.

Said this plenty of times but the stadium itself isn't great for atmosphere.

My suggestion would be invest your time into thinking up some unique songs taking inspiration from Manchester's musical heritage and get it sent around social media. Any recent song sung en masse has gone this route, but limit singing about our rivals/stealing songs our rivals already sing by just changing the words. Be original!

Italian fans don’t have drums and have atmospheres as good as the other European fans.

Everyone has got very confused and think it’s actually the drum when it bloody well isn’t, it’s the fans! THE FANS, NOT THE DRUMS!

Drums are fucking shit, proper fucking shit!

Ive just said in another thread; The guy banging it couldn’t even bang it twice in time to the claps for the Guardiola chant.

I never EVER want to hear that shit ever again. We are MANCHESTER CITY FOOTBALL CLUB not some bollocks no mark drum banger club from Lancashire from last decade like Bolton/Blackburn/Wigan etc.

That was fucking dreadful to hear at a City game!

they have both. well some clubs do in italy.

some have multiple people with megaphones

I’ll let you all into a secret, I was on the megaphone. ;-)

I know, fire away. :-(

I appreciate people’s views and respect them.

There has been a lot of discussion with the club about the megaphone. It’s been on going for months.

It’s not a decision that has been made over night.

Both the club and 1894 have compromised on issues about using the megaphone, it’s location on the terraces, etc, until an agreement was finally reached.

Tonight was a trial of the megaphone. (and the drum)

Both 1894 and the club felt a CL match was the right match to trial both, as the atmosphere is usually pretty dire, if we’re being honest. As it was tonight.

A PL game was discussed, but the general consensus was PL games, especially the big PL games, tend to take care of themselves, as regards the atmosphere.

So tonight.

It was agreed the megaphone would be used sporadically, at certain times, and during certain chants. There where occasions when it did get over used. I’ll admit that. There were occasions when it didn’t have any effect. There were occasions when it did have an effect. It was a mixed bag tonight.

TBH, I was expecting some abuse, but the vast majority of people seemed ok with it, and apart from some light hearted banter, the megaphone seemed to go down ok? Maybe I’m wrong?

What feedback we did get, was that people at the back couldn’t really hear the megaphone. But when they did, they tended to join in. The Guardiola chant in the 2nd half being the best example.

Obviously 1894 and the club would like some honest and constructive feedback on the megaphone and the drum, regardless if it’s positive or negative.

Please don’t be abusive.

As I’ve already stated, it was a trial tonight.

Thanks.

I was in CB level 3 and could barely hear the megaphone/drum.

I am all for this as it works at other clubs like rangers etc.

I hope you get to trial it again this time with the leashes off, be great if more people got involved but then again we had a really good band called the sherlocks playing and there was like 5 people clapping them

TBH, l think I need to buy Just For Men Hair Dye. Lol!

Interesting fan/age demographics from that picture.

There's not many people joining in above us.

Come to think of it. Hmmm.

I’m not sure.

Always thought the noise came through the actual megaphone and not any speakers.

Bar me using it, the megaphone is controlled from the control room. Don‘t think the volume can be controlled? Perhaps it can be? We’ll have to speak to the club.

When I tested the megaphone inside the empty stadium in the Summer, it sounded much louder. But it was an empty stadium.

According to the rags its always empty

The megaphone I think works and makes more people join in. Keep taking that to games.

Change the culture in the stands. As it’s non existent right now. The traditional English culture doesn’t exist anymore other then the odd game

Maybe shout “join in you ****s” next week.

Where’s the picture from by the way?

Totally agree, songs are to short when we sing them, seems to be an English PL habit the three different song in 90 seconds rather than one song lasting two minutes. A song then pics up momentum and gives fans a chance to learn the words and join in.

Perfect example of how we can do that is the concourse, a song will go on for minutes, then once in the terraces its hands in pockets or on phones. If we could dictate the songs more at 1894 we would sing differently, but try as we do you can not dictate what and how we sing on match day. We carry on a song and after 20 seconds it ends up three of us singing only.

Im all for a long song ( non of the uh ah uh ah, actual singing and hands clapped ) carried on for two minutes, then a break for a minute or two, then another long song. At moment we are still 90 songs in 90 minutes and keep repeating songs until fans are fed up of it. It doesn't work.

More noise and enthusiasm came from the group of schoolkids at the back of SS3. I'd invite them back and bin the megaphone

If only it was so simple, highlighted a few times it is impossible to dictate the songs unless you have a megaphone / capo like Palace or Huddersfield do. This type of control does not work at city as we can see from this thread. Be original, this is the perfect way, but as we are in the block ( not a fault of 1894 ) it wont happen.

You can see how we are going round and round in circles

"try a drum" - feedback is stick the drum up your arse
"use a megaphone" - feedback is why do we have to use that.
"sing different songs" - fans wont

Could go on and on, we are very divided as to how we think we should improve the atmosphere. Top of the list for me and obvious is safestand, group together and sing for godsake.

It isn't a lot but everytime I see them on tv they come across loud and persistent.

The Homesdale Ultras moved from the corner of the stand, near the corner flag, to the middle of the stand, behind the goal. Palace fans in there were relocated. Apparently some weren’t happy about being relocated. But the club decided to side with https://www.holmesdale.net/page.php?id=101&cat=2 after they boycotted the home games, and the atmosphere pretty much collapsed at Palace home games. They’ve now got a prime position in the middle of the lower tier to get chants going, and to get the lower tier joining in, as well as the rest of the stadium, which does happen.

Apparently they’ve got a few 100 singers who congregate together. Something similar for us would be a block, which holds about 500 fans. A safe standing block would probably hold about 750 fans, depending on the seat configuration.

The one song that used to keep going was the never felt more than singing the Blue's one. The one that does my head in is the empty seats at home song. A group sang it non stop for what seemed like hours one home game it was like fucking torture.

I thought they were more noticeable and louder by the corner. I remember them having a fall out with the club.

We can still do it when we want, Southampton at home in the second half was a perfect example. It isn't just us though, as others have said other grounds suffer as well.
