Criticism of Pep

I think partly the problem is so many people deify him and bang on about his 'genius'. That's why I think he needs to prove himself with these crazy changes of formation that have hurt us in the Champions League (and now the Prem this season) the past few seasons in comparison to the countless trophies we've won by playing a pretty settled system/side.

Too much rotation again.

Bar injuries, when was the last time Pep played the same team twice on the run, even after a convincing win in the first of any game?

Pep looks miles away from doing it in Europe.

3 seasons in the Champions League, during that time having the best City side to grace the Premier League in the last 10 years.

I would argue all 3 Champions League campaigns he was the main reason we did not progress further.

Season 1 we went to Monaco with a healthy home leg advantage and capitulated.Pep refused to change his style, yet we neither defended,or attacked that night. The players looked confused for most that match.

Season 2 Liverpool away, again we played to Liverpool strengths, wtf was he thinking in that match,God only knows.Return leg was a valiant effort by us,we had too much to do.

Last season i think Pep fucked up not playing KDB,was arrogant.I felt we should have have been Champions of Europe last season. That was our season.

Pep is a good manager when he can buy the best players and steam roll a domestic League by out scoring the opposition.

I will be forever grateful for all the success he has delivered.

I dont see him delivering the Champions League though. He simply does not have the tactical aptitude to negotiate tight games with near equals. He refuses to be pragmatic, when it calls for pragmatism.

A good manager Yes,a City legend yes.

A man to deliver the Champions League i dont think so.

Hope he proves me wrong.

we missed like 5 sitters in Monaco and should have had a penalty if I recall it good. We absolutely battered them on that night, much more than at Etihad where they were on pair for most of the game.

Whendid he play the the same team twice in the 198 points seasons.

My memory doesn't stretch that far back through one season, but a lot of players were pissed off that they werent getting game time. Yes, he changed players every now and again, but the nucleus of the team was the same every Week.

I appreciate Liverpool haven't had our injuries, but Klopp plays the same back 4 every Week. And the same attack. He only shuffles his limited midfield.

If a team is chopped, changed and rotated every match, they don't get used to playing with each other. Pep played 3 at the back tonight. Why?.

Can’t really understand the criticism of the starting setup tonight. It very obviously worked for the opening twenty minutes when we were cutting through them with ease. Once the goal went in, the players’ arses went. Inexplicable really, given that they hadn’t been in our half prior to that, but not surprising - it happens fairly regularly, and is a major reason why, realistically, we’ll probably get nowhere near winning the champions league this season. We’re mentally soft.
No issue with any criticism of him for not changing things sooner subsequent to the goal. But then again, it’s not as though they were creating any chances. The second half performance was dreadful, I thought, in terms of our sloppiness on the ball and the poor choices everyone was making. But there wasn’t any great tactical issue.
One of the most noticeable drop-offs between this season and the last two seems to be our inability to convert early dominance into goals. There have been games where I’ve been far from convinced by the system/formation, but we do still invariably create early chances. That’s not a coincidence, but rather because we’re usually set up to exploit the weaknesses of the opposition. Not taking advantage of that is making things difficult.
And if all that sounds like too much of a defence of Pep - I do find the constant, wholesale changes to the setup frustrating. Yes, it can be a great advantage to be able to spring a surprise (as the first leg showed), but I still think we’d be better served with more consistency. Aside from his Bayern side in his final season, I genuinely struggle to think of a single precedent of a successful team that has been constantly switching systems game in, game out.

With five minutes left to play tonight he takes off KDB & Kun. What if they’d nicked another and it went to pens? Absolutely stupid piss poor management. Genius? Give me a break. And don’t get me started that no matter how shite Sterling plays he will never take his little pet off. Let’s see how he yet again tinkers with the team and formation for the next game, whilst Klopp sticks with the same and marches on. Go figure.

Sorry pep doesn’t change tactics when it’s not working.

first 20 minutes amazing but players let him down, yet he still picks sterling. Prob is he won’t change tactics or subs when needed.

second half we should of set up different without sterling but he’s very stubborn.

how many times has this happened this season? Too many if we are being honest.

he needs new players especially defence but no signings made even if temp. That’s a huge concern for me & suggest he’s gone at the end of the season.

no chance of champs league with this defence
