Tomorrow morning probably. A few constituencies have started second and third counts but a few others (Killarney definitely) aren't going to finish their first count until after 7pm tonight.

Michael Martin already talking about the country must come first.
Only short of saying...in the national interest.
Won’t get pushed on the SF question though.

Question to Irish Bluemoon Punters.
Why didn't the shinners put up more candidates?
They did badly in the local elections and were only polling at about 10% when candidate registration opened. Since its PR and not FPTP putting up too many candidates can cost you seats, there's a couple of FF and FG seats at risk today as they've too many candidates in those constituencies. Even with that though they were too cautious in several constituencies, they've already left 6 or 7 seats behind them now and will just have to hope that PBP, Social Democrats, Áontu or Labour pick them up. 1 lost to FF in Carlow already where none of those parties had a credible candidate.

Better to keep the cliches to a minimum or he will stray into "we're all in this together" territory

FG seem to be quite unified and unequivocal that they won’t go into government with SF.
FF don’t seem as definite about it although Martin was quite unequivocal about it before the election.

I find both parties quite hypocritical in expecting the unionists up north to share power with SF, and down south FF in particular can’t even put an explanation on why they would not.

Both FF and FG were born out of civil war politics and several reincarnations of different political bodies have been brought into mainstream politics through the ensuing decades, dropping the militant elements along the way.

The younger generations know nothing of this history and care less. What they are looking for is a future.

They’re topping the polls in Michael Martin and Leo Varadkar’s constituencies and winning seats where they had lost them at the council elections.
They didn’t see it coming and although it has been a huge victory for them, it is also a negative of their campaign.

A big opportunity missed.

They ran more candidates last time around. 50 instead of 42.

Numbers looking like it could end 42 for FF, and 37 each for FG and SF.
37 out of 42 is some result.

As you said Earlier, 6-7 seats left behind judging by their massive majorities in some constituencies.

I've called SF at 39, can only see 3 they won't win.

The nice part of them fucking up is that they're dragging a lot of the smaller left wing parties into seats on transfers.

the whole thing has been quite fascinating. forming a government will be an interesting one to watch too.

Latest predictions are
FF 45
SF 37
FG 35
Rest 43

So take the Ceann Comhairle (Speaker) out of it, the magic number is 80 and it’s hard to see where a government will be formed from that.

As Mary Lou has said already it would be undemocratic to exclude them from talks on forming a government.
Looking at the projections if she manages to get Lab/PBP/SD/Áontu onside (and she should, their surpluses are giving these parties seats and they've more in common than not) as Howlin was pitching for midweek, then there's a block of around 55 left wing TDs in the next Dail that would be near impossible to ignore.

Looks to me like it’s up to FF, what they’re willing to do.
Could be a very short lived government unless pride is swallowed.
Another election?
Who wants to risk that?
