they don't need to form a coalition tho? they can form a minority government. but who gets that right, the party with the most seats? or does the party with the largest vote share have a moral right to try a minority government?

the snp did that in 2007, i still think to date that was their mist successful spell as the governing party, they did it for 5 years, waskt easy, particularly against the backdrop of a uk wide recession and cuts. They did however have one more seat than labour, which SF won't.
A minority government in this Dail won't see Christmas. Only the external threat of Brexit kept the last one afloat. FF and FG despise each other and neither want to work with SF.

If FF go into coalition with SF, Michael Martin should resign as leader, but he won't.
It'll have to be FF and SF in my opinion. How stable that will be, god only knows.
Going off the public statements from several FF TDs today they could well end up having a civil war over the issue.

39 constituencies of between 3 and 5 seats. 160 seats total.

Are there areas that are traditionally one or other like we have. Fot example Scotland used to be a Labour shoe in, before they sold their soul. Is there the same type of thing there?

Yes and no as its PR. Mayo used to elect 4 FG TDs from 5 seats, FF were always strong in Cork county, Labour had the west coast and the urban areas. All up in the air now though, several constituencies have no FF TD for the first time, several have no FF or FG for the first time, Labour have been wiped out in areas and SF have their first seats in a century in quite a few places.

Labour getting wiped out seems to be a common occurrence these days. SF are going for their ground it seems, more houses, health etc. If SF were in Gov who would lead them in the Oireachtas?

Mary-Lou Macdonald is the party leader in the Republic. It's not just Sinn Fein taking their ground, Solidarity-PBP and the Social Democrats are largely made up of ex-Labour members, affiliates and candidates who fucked off the party for aiding FG with austerity. Both look likely to take more seats than Labour in this election.

Might have already started before the election tbh. Dublin SW just saw a FF TD with 5166 votes get eliminated, only 20 of those votes went to his running mate, have noticed similar several times today.
Just noticed that in my constituency Heney’s votes of circa 4.5k votes were distributed and only about half went to Haughey. I would have thought a lot more.

Add to that it looks like FF, Lab, SD for the last three seats, but with the next two to be eliminated being left candidates the transfers could be very interesting.
It would make my night if Haughey lost out to the Green Party, but David Healy has a long way to make up.

Was looking at that one, he looks too far behind.

what are the chances of another election?
Hard to say. SF would love one as they'd know pretty much exactly where to run extra candidates in the constituencies they ran in and could take a stab at a few others, but FF and FG would be terrified of one as not only would it give SF a chance to contest more seats but voters would probably take it out on them. At the same time there's no easy route to a coalition with the makeup of the current Dail.

Don't follow Irish politics but I am a bit surprised that Sinn Fein have won the popular vote? Is this just a protest vote, I understand they are left wing, did they promise the earth like Corbyn did last December, and if so why was the result different to the UK? Genuinely interested in the thoughts of others more in the know than myself. Cheers

Everyone is fucking fed up with FF and FG.
