Your post is a little anachronistic imo. Africa isn’t just defined principally rurally now; it has some huge cities where this could sweep through and devastate.African nations will be the best at containing it. I just got back from West Africa yesterday and was chatting about it. They contained ebola effectively after all.
Lots about Africa will lend itself to containment. Lots of villages live in compounds, families live together and sustain eachother, there are militaries that dont take any shit, non democratic leaderships that impose the will they want. People dont move about as much as in western countries, and they are very effective at keeping their homes and themselves clean, due to the red dust that African villages and towns are built on and people live amongst, and the insects that can come into the house. It isnt third world in the way people think either. They have historically lived with managing disease in a way that other continents havent. It will spread everywhere but Africa wont be disproportionately affected
That you've been googling masks?Nice to see ads for mask popping up on here, I think they are trying to tell us something
I was about to respond to say the same. And most African nations do not have well-developed healthcare systems to accommodate such an urban outbreak, nor established screening, testing, or emergency response programmes.Your post is a little anachronistic imo. Better than Co-op Funeral Services I guess.Nice to see ads for mask popping up on here, I think they are trying to tell us something
I agree but the post I was responding to referenced the third world and it being a factor in the spread. It will go through any city in the same way, but I wanted to clear up the concerns the poster hadYour post is a little anachronistic imo. I have used my iPad, as well as my substantial graphic design talents, to create the following to demonstrate why “pushing it away” is an important mitigation strategy from a public healthcare capacity perspective. If anyone knows what this means can they explain it? How do they "Push it away"?
Prof Whitty said benefits of the delay phase included:
- Pushing the peak of cases "further away from the winter pressures on the NHS" so that there was "more capacity to respond"
On the bright side, it's Africa. You can create depopulated zones to stop the virus spreading and nobody cares.I was about to respond to say the same. I understand @Uncle Wally One Ball’s point in the context of the rural communities, but the mega cities like Accra, Kinshasa, Lagos, Nairobi, and even Johannesburg (to a lesser extent) will fair rather poorly, unfortunately.
I have actually seen those challenges first hand whilst in Accra MSF and a few places outside of Africa with MSF rwhen I was younger.
Fair enough, but my point is that the devastation in those big African cities could be palpably worse than elsewhere for a number of reasonsI agree but the post I was responding to referenced the third world and it being a factor in the spread. You got the colours right for good and bad , that's the main thing. ;-)I have used my iPad, as well as my substantial graphic design talents, to create the following to demonstrate why “pushing it away” is an important mitigation strategy from a public healthcare capacity perspective.

To respond to the inevitable snark, it was actually quite the achievement to keep my hands steady to draw this without my stylus (which I think the missus nicked).
769 new cases and 41 new deaths in Italy. Germany cases up 84% in 1 day.
Not good.
It’s not a good trend, by any means.769 new cases and 41 new deaths in Italy. Germany cases up 84% in 1 day.
Not good.
At least we'll have an excuse for not selling out Wembley for the semi if we get there ;-)My guess is that very soon after the first UK deaths they’ll pull the plug on sporting events. Public opinion will harden against large gatherings, there’ll be a step up in the anxiety levels.
The PL will be happy for games to be played behind closed doors if that fulfills the Sky contract
Can’t see the FA being happy playing the semi finals and final in an empty Wembley stadium. I wouldn’t be surprised if those games were postponed until August, possibly in place of the Community Shield
All of the science degrees put to good use. ;-)You got the colours right for good and bad , that's the main thing. ;-)
