Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

No rationale in suspending sporting events says the government. So far so good.
The government did have a good point for once.
If we played games behind closed doors everyone would just go to the pub.
I’m not advocating panic buying. But there could be a serious shortage of alcohol.

Nothing would be more perfect than having the season cancelled and no title awarded. Then Liverpool could be an actual victim!

The really need to take new steps with the Stewarding on entry. I don’t want someones face a foot away from mine. It was interesting at a gig the other night they were looking at a screen rather than checking everyone. I didn’t get checked at all. Last time I went there it was horrendous with emptying pockets into a tray etc

Football authorities waiting until Liverpool have secured the PL title, then they confirm them Champions and suspend football thereafter, so Liverpool will be both PL & CL holders until the coronavirus epidemic is over.

Well as much as it would be amusing if the scousers won the league against Palace in an empty stadium imagine if that happened. You would probably have about 50,000 maybe more outside the ground that day or at least in the centre of the City. It wouldn’t solve anything and if they were all outside the ground it could be pretty dangerous.

It is absolutely pointless cancelling gatherings if you are still allowing millions of people to socialise, shop and travel freely. You are just as likely to catch it on a bus train, tram or tube and walking around a supermarket than at a game. To me if they cancel gatherings it is just so it looks like they are doing something.

That is true. You should be cancelling travel, schools and work places before football.

I would of thought isolating the most vulnerable people as the easiest way of dealing with the virus.
We seem to have past the containment stage.

Let's use it for football related stuff involving the virus, big thread in off topic for the rest.

How long until games are behind closed doors in England?

France are now doing it and Italy have just suspended Serie A until April 3rd.

I'm not sure we can suspend the league because of the Euro's but surely a matter of time now.

I thought the Covid19 pandemic probably deserved a football focused thread for us to talk about its effects on sport as well as the off topic one which is more geared towards how we will all die and the economy is doomed.

Italy just suspended all football until April 5. They decided that even playing behind closed doors was too dangerous with 40+ people per team moving in and out of high risk areas to stage games.

What Napoli and Juventus will do in the Champions League is sure to become a big topic shortly.
