COVID-19 — Coronavirus

What they were referring to with that comment in my opinion is an Italy-style lockdown. They feel, rightly or wrongly, that we would cease from obeying if the lockdown went on too long. So they are delaying that decision until the peak.

Cancelling Cheltenham, cancelling football... none of that is initiating a lockdown. You are still free to roam the country. I don’t see how you can apply those comments from the press conference to cancelling sporting events. They were talking about more serious measures than that and getting bored from being housebound.

I am sure the italian lockdown still allows you to leave your house and visit shops for food and walk the streets, it has jist restricted people from using transport systems and being in any sizes crowd or standing close to each other.
Cafes and bars are open till 6pm curfew

I expect a lock down wouldn't stop you going out, but would stop mass gathering.

I think this myth a lockdown means you are stuck in your house going stir crazy is being over egged to back up a lack of action tbh.

Seriously having taken the night to digest that complete lack of any action from the government today I do beilieve that as a person who uses public transport, works in an education enviroment, deals with mamy people internally amd externally daily at work that I will more likely get Convid-19 at this rate and probably have a good chance of dying due to my bronchial condiiton.

I don't believe taking a psychiological and predictive science viewed response is the right approach and a massive gamble.

I will probably make a decission to bin off tomorrows game if it isn't cancelled just to be on the safe side as it seems the only way to protect yourself is if you do it off your own back rather than wait for any action from up top.

I think you’ve just answered the very question on the very first post of this thread that you started back in January...do whatever your instincts and the science tells you is the best way to protect yourself with your situation.

Correct. And in Northern Italy the supply chains remained open and shops are stocked.
People shopping as they need to.
Saw a live interview with an Irish journalist there tonight. He is living there and part of the fortnight quarantine but described it as life going on calmly as normal.

I am staying at home now and not moving out unless absolutely necessary. I am not waiting for a government official to tell me to stay at home. I am going to make a big pan of stew and a big pan of soup.
There is too much mixed guidance and information being peddled and no one knows who to trust. Its better to be safe than sorry.

Mate, I can’t even imagine the anger you feel, given your condition. I risk losing both my nans to this, they’d be in a really bad way if they get it. It’s overwhelming, feeling like you are being let down with life on the line, but you are right we need to take matters into our own hands. If they are not going to force people to be socially distant at this moment, at least make that decision for ourselves. Keeping my fingers crossed for you mate, just keep making sensible decisions.

Don't worry about me? I have a good chance of catchig it, and am using worst case scenarios as some seem to not grasp how this will impact many peole, but many more are even in bigger danger, those with cystic fibrosis, diabetes, heart conditions etc.

Coming form a catering envirment my hygiene is already on the ball with hand washing etc, but I was in the pub sunday and only one other person I saw wash their hand after having a piss, so this government advice is being ignored and will be.

As for going out and to the game, it is one of those things, if I risk it I only have myself to blame, but also a responsibility to others as with the 5 day period before even showing signs plenty could already have it on sat and not even know

Not according to my friend in Italy (near Monza). Bars and restaurants are closed. Just food shops and chemists open. Might not be the same everywhere of course.

May have changed that was what was reported start of the week the curfew, so they may now be shut altogether.

However the lockdown doesn't mean imprisonment in yoyr own house which seems to be what is insiunated by our gov when saying locking down too early will have people rebel after a few weeks confinement and start going out again.

From what he says it pretty much is. They need authorisation to leave the house.

Perhaps not the same everywhere though.

There was a very simple answer.to your question given today by the Chief Medical Officer.

Basically he stated that if they introduce certain measures too early they won't have as much effect as if they are introduced at the right time so could actually be counter-productive.
His reasoning was that if you ask people to stay in for too long, they’ll get bored and eventually just go outside and do whatever they want.

He said this was based on “behavioural science”.

Whereas the other developed nations are taking the view that if people’s lives are in mortal danger, they’ll stay indoors for as long as is necessary.

I agree with the second idea.

The reason our government is advising people to carry on as normal is because they want people to get the virus. It’s called herd immunity.

They want a certain amount of people to get it now so that patients are drip fed in to the NHS bit by bit, instead of all at once.

Their advice to carry on as normal is not because they think going to a stadium with 55k others is just as safe as staying at home.

It’s because the NHS is so chronically underfunded that it’s at breaking point right now so they’re trying to drip feed patients in to the system to manage capacity and they’re hoping it won’t reach it’s peak until the warmer months when the NHS is under less pressure.

If you want to be a guinea pig for their theory, crack on. I don’t need Boris Johnson to tell me whether avoiding close contact with people is better for my health than just carrying on as if nothing is happening but giving my hands a good old wash.

my friend is in the south in reggio calabria and it is the same there. they have to download a form to fill in to go out ...if you get caught with out it and dont have a valid reason you get 3 months in the nick and he knows 2 people who have died from it. he is amazed that we are doing so little in this country.

Stay safe mate.

No you don't need authorizations to leave the house. Only if you pass a police post (usually over larger distances between towns but sometimes also inside big towns) you need to have a reason (work, health, shopping, going back home) and declare that reason to the officer that stops you. You then sign a self-certificate paper that states you are aware of the consequences of lying to an officer about the reason of your movements in this situation (up to 3 months of prison and a 260€ fine) and you go on your merry way. People have already been arrested by the police for doing stuff like gatherings to play cards or drink outside after certifying they were going to work, so they're actually checking you go where you tell them.

And some activities are open: pharmacies, food shops and food stores, other useful like repair shops, newspaper vendors, gas stops, most factories that can't work from home, financial services, farms, and lots of others that are listed in the decree document. What I mean is the only closed ones are bars, cafes, restaurants (though home deliveries are ok) hairdressers, clothes shop, basically everything that isn't immediately useful. And the businesses that do stay open have to do everything they can to keep social distancing of 1 metre or more or at least protect workers in some way.

I can't list everything that's written in the decree because it's quite long but in my opinion they're sensible measures given our situation and it doesn't feel like living in a cage, more like being watched over.

Good summary!
But the herd immunity will build-up anyway, just a bit slower if we avoid all unnecessary gatherings.
Even Boris said they want to keep the curve flat to help NHS manage severe cases.

Bottom line Germany have a similar strategy as England. We are a bit ahead and picking up strict measures as the curve is going steeper.

Boris' hesitation is indeed difficult to understand and I hope to get advice from German experts about his strategy.

All major US sports are suspended, I didn't expect that so quickly.
Won't take long til Boris has the next pk...

The anti-malarial drug which was referenced in today's press conference is almost certainly hydroxychloroquine I referred to earlier. This is being investigated as a possible treatment. There is a suggestion that if you take this you could prevent replication of the virus in your body. I don't know if there have been trials but it's been done in-vitro in the lab with good results.

BBC report "Drugs including those used to treat malaria and HIV are being tested, while researchers are working hard to develop a vaccine." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/explainers-51632801
