Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

I'm not sure they'll be able to restart in the summer, we're going to need every football player to have caught it and recovered by then or they'll be at risk. I've seen people suggest we go back up to 22 teams next season and relegate 4.

And if they do play it in the summer, will anyone want to watch matches in empty stadiums with players who haven't trained for 3 or 4 weeks??

The most interesting thing is how they will resolve promotion and relegation if they outright cancel/void the season.

Leeds and West Brom would miss out on close to £500m between them if they just cancelled promotion, and each relegated team would lose upwards of £100m if they went the "as it stands" route - which with Villa having a game in hand is pretty impossible.
The German idea of two promoted to the top tier with a larger top tier seems like a good solution. So, the premier league probably won’t do that.

Far, far too many people on here gloating about the virus taking away the possibility of Liverpool winning the league. This thing will/already has caused the loss of thousands of lives. If I could swap one lost life for Liverpool winning the league I'd happily accept every second of every day of my life.

Your right pal. Suppose some perspective is needed. It’s a game at the end of the day.

Two biggest and most influential English clubs won't like the league ended, so I don't think it will happen. Maybe some temporary suspension.

Liverpool were waiting 30 years to win the league, they are very close to it and they'll fight their lives to not have a void season. Rags are very close to top 4 place too and they won't want void season too as it would mean another year without CL.

Callum Hudson Odoi has tested positive and Chelsea have isolated their 1st team, along with staff and backroom staff.

Seeing as they got to choose the new prem chairman you can bet they are right in there deciding to keep the prem going for their own benefits and why it has not been binned already

Christ. So that’s a Chelsea player and Arsenal manager testing positive with three Leicester players and Mendy waiting results. Can’t help thinking the Govt estimate of 10,000 infected UK wide is either seriously underestimating the problem or elite footballers are just very unlucky.

Think it goes to show a lot more than the current 500 have it, it's only those that have access to testing kits like professional sports teams that can test for it immediately.

If ever the PL & FA needed any further proof that its still safe to play games (at any league level) then they need their fucking heads examining. And as for Boris ... well `nuff said.
