Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

Looking at the speed of infection across the clubs , with games all ready cancelled and with travel bans and isolation procedures being followed, i think the European fixtures are toast for next 2-3 months, probably gone this season. I don't think playing behind closed doors will come into it. Arsenal are out of it with Arteta testing positive as that's a stage further than they were last week and they didn't want play against us. Leicester, Chelsea, Brighton , games are stacking up too quickly . At this rate the season will be written off, can't see clubs wanting to pick it up again before next season starts ( if it starts on time?) . Liverpool will demand the title is given to them but i can't see how that is done unless they manage to get their next 2 wins under their belt before the curtain falls . At least it fucks up their season

If they did that they will have too relegate the teams at the bottom, because the teams at the top of the other leagues will also expect to be awarded the title and be promoted.

It will be incredibly difficult to finish the season. Assuming they call off the Euros ASAP they might try to extend it until the end of June and just fit in games when they can, behind closed doors. But it would be horribly anti climactic. Those clubs involved in European qualification or relegation might take it seriously but the rest would be just be going through the motions. Without crowds to keep them honest and something to play for there would be some embarrassing performances. By comparison our 8-1 defeat at Boro would look good.

Christ. So that’s a Chelsea player and Arsenal manager testing positive with three Leicester players and Mendy waiting results. Can’t help thinking the Govt estimate of 10,000 infected UK wide is either seriously underestimating the problem or elite footballers are just very unlucky.

You would think clubs at the elite level would automatically have tested all their players in recent times but the virus is so contagious albeit not as vicious a killer as some in the past are what would it matter.

Obviously other players have the disease across all clubs most likely but many haven't been tested for it amazingly and many don't know they have it.

No doubt for example if Mendy tests positive then its like some other players have it as well at City and beyond.

The wise thing to do is to do what they have done with all team sports in the USA and suspend them until further notice.

Crazy to play only 6 of the first leg Europa ties last night for example , you could understand if weather or some other external factor that was one off was involved but this is a pandemic and one again much more contagious than SARS or Eboli etc was and football players are like family members in season.

if the FA don't suspend until further notice then clearly their is an agenda running and we know what that is.

You don't want anybody even someone you have little respect for to catch it but so what if Liverpool's first title is delayed for weeks or months or the season is cut short.

Tonight they must decide to suspend all games in all divisions not cop out and say we are playing this weekend behind closed doors that is those games that are not called off as obviously Chelsea's will as well.

Two biggest and most influential English clubs won't like the league ended, so I don't think it will happen. Maybe some temporary suspension.

Liverpool were waiting 30 years to win the league, they are very close to it and they'll fight their lives to not have a void season. Rags are very close to top 4 place too and they won't want void season too as it would mean another year without CL.

you th8nk United would be happy for liverpool to move ahead of them in the most league titles won? Not a chance

That is my hope. There'll be so many other teams arguing about relegation and promotion, it'll be really messy and couldn't be sorted . Dippers will claim giving them the title doesn't affect any other teams. A strong case if they win 2 more games. If it turns into a real bun fight and squabble it'll affect their chances. Next few days will clinch it, today's meeting will be crucial

If the meeting is this morning at the PL hq, then they should cancel the season. No doubt that there will be a certain club shouting and spitting phlegm about continuing

Unfortunately, the clubs that matter will want it to continue behind closed doors, so it probably will.

depends how many are saying cancel or continue I suppose

big call because if it is a small minority saying continue and the PL choose to then they should get all the backlash they deserve

And if they do there will be thousands of scouse rats outside the ground as they just had to be there to witness istree being made. They just need to suspend the season now.

The options are
1) continue behind closed doors?
Virtually impossible now as too many clubs effected
2) suspend the season until?
Getting more difficult as no one knows when it will be possible to continue The government spoke about 14 weeks that’s mid July around about pre season
3) make this season void?
Obviously a lot of clubs, not just PL will not want this as it is disadvantageous for them

imho the only option is 3 but I think 2 is the likely outcome from today with a proviso that it will be reviewed in a few weeks

I cannot see any other option than voiding the seasons and European places being awarded on the end positions

As you say, playing behind closed doors is out of the question. Suspending it is pretty unworkable - amongst the obvious reason that we are only at the start of CV, players contracts run out in June/July, the summer heat could make games unplayable across Europe and then the issues of pre-season and the transfer market

There is no end in sight of CV, no even close. Better to. Just call it a day and hope that next season starts in August
