Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

Realistically, do you actually think only '10 people' have died of this? Given our inability to test properly and how quickly this is spreading, I'd sat to think the number is 10 is ignorant.

500k people die in the UK every year.
Normal flu takes 17k a year.
All worldwide indications are that other than the elderly and those with pre existing respiratory conditions, it’s not particularly fatal.
The real impact of this isn’t the deaths, but the strain on infrastructure, NHS and the impact of 1 in 5 workers self isolating.

If one thing has come from this debacle it’s the world has seen exactly how inept and money driven the premier league really is. A statement released going against the entire worlds actions declaring this weeks games go ahead as planned and then less than an hour later having a manager test positive quickly followed by a player from another team and 3 additional teams go into self isolation to add to the one already in it makes them look like the clueless morons that they are.

I agree, governments and lots of sporting bodies/companies have really shown their true colours. They don't give a fuck.

This is a bit of a pivotal time in how we let governments and corporations dictate to us in my opinion.

Judging by what has happened in other countries and the spread of the virus, best case scenario is being able to play again in 3 or 4 months time. With this in mind, I fully expect the PL/FA to call off games for the next week.

By the govs own prediction the virus won’t peak for 10-14 weeks. So a further 10-14 weeks to get to where we are today if it follows the usual bell curve of distribution.
So that’s 7 months to get back to the situation we have today.
We won’t see pro football again until mid September if they stop now.

Fuck them???

Bournemouth are the 8th Premier League club to be affected by the coronavirus in some form. Artur Boruc along with 4 1st team members of staff are self isolating:

I'm not being hyperbolic about this at all either, I agree the biggest strain on it is the impact on medical facilities. But lets not kid ourselves here, that number would be much greater than 10. If the number is 2% mortality rate, then given predictions of 5000 - you'd have to think already 100 people have been taken as a result of this.

The fact we have had governments artificially keeping number low (for self interests) - tells you all you need to know.

Also what do you suggest we do to those with pre existing conditions, just let them keel over in the street?

Rumours are that the PL will propose a 3-4 week suspension. They're deluded if they think we'll be able to start playing again at the start of April. Maybe they're just buying a bit of breathing time to work out what to do.

That’s a sensible option. The odds are heavily stacked against resuming games then but there is no actual need to void the season right now.

It seems quite clear to me that between the Premier League and the PM they are playing cat and mouse my guess is for insurance reasons if the government suspend the league the Premier League has a better case for claiming back any losses. If its the league they don't

All that being said there is a personal cost I found out last night that my middle daughter has all the symptoms of this, her younger sister returned from China over the weekend... We really need to start taking this seriously and not sleepwalk ourselves into thousands of deaths

I don't want to think of sterotypes around Burnley or stoke etc but how is your daughters younger sister not your daughter?

(its very quiet at work and I've been giving this far too much thought and cant figure it out)

I don’t think it’s particularly helpful to call each other out as to which figures you want to believe. And I’m not saying you are btw, I just picked one of these posts at random. You have the official figures from government that will always have a lag, and the no need to panic brigade versus the 1.3 million people will die. I’m no expert and either could be true. I just look at the fact China built a 1,000 bed hospital in eight days. I don’t think it was a vanity project.

The facts are everyone will be affected, if only in the pocket. 100,000 containers leave Shanghai port every week. A couple of weeks ago it was down to zero. Whichever way you dress this up, it’s bad news.

Number 10 are very ignorant,coonts.

I would totally ignore most of their advice except the hygiene ones which people should follow anyway in normal circumstances. Avoid crowds and other people as much as possible, stay home when you can until it hopefully starts to die down.

12 hours ago all games going ahead this weekend, now off. Imagine the shit that’s gonna unfold in another 12 hours ?

league is over
