There is no way a start up is getting in on the vaccine act,GSK will be the ones making it i'm sure,no step will be skipped,it is very regulated to make it safe for humans
As long as it’s not a US company with the patent. If it is, Trump will do his best to screw the rest of the world out every penny he can.

Rest of the academic year at Liverpool uni is going online which means I’ll be paying for an empty room in a rented house for my son while he’s back home eating his weight in food that I’ll be buying no doubt, whilst he’s pocketing his loan.
I guess other unis will be announcing something similar
Tenancy should be a max of 6 months, and I'm guessing hes had it since Sep 19? If that's the case it's a months notice.

not really.

I would assume CRO doing the actual work or maybe CDMO. GSK are one of the larger vaccine producers but typically in licence the API production because the smaller, research oriented companies don’t have a capability nor specialism in this.

The big boys may just be funding it. The start-ups are focussed scientists, but almost certainly can't pay for all the testing - they are really productive in cutting edge stuff, with the big boys providing the scale and hardware.

Not like the scousers to shy away from work at the first opportunity.

Friend of mine's son was travelling back from Leicester today, same thing there - rest of the year online.

Just for some input from Europe, I live near Amsterdam and this week everything has changed. I haven't seen mass panic buying yet, I don't think Dutch people are prone to that as much as us English, but you can see people taking it upon themselves. I took my dog for a walk today, all the pubs that are usually busy I walked past are vitually empty. The restaurants have a handful of people in. I ( and many others ) have been told to work from home for now a minimum of one month. I have a few friends who've had the symptoms ( I also have ) and from what I can gather we've all isolated as best as we can. I go out only if I really need shopping and to walk my dog in a local wood. Take away services are only accepting online payment and leave your food at the door with no contact.

It really worries me reading on here that people back home are carrying on as normal. Luckily I talked my sister out of going out tonight, but I imagine it's normal service thoughout the country. My parents are both 75 and I am begging them to isolate, they have the ideal circumstances to do so butI don't know if they are being stubborn, or whether they are being influenced by the governemnts stance. They're almost carrying on as normal.

On a personal note I guess like many here I am at the age not considered vulnerable, but call me selfish I am worried about the isolation aspect. I need the gym for my mental ealth but realise its probably not wise now, and working from home for someone is social and needs interaction is going to get to me mentally, but there are a lot more serious things to think about other than that.

I think I need to take a break from twitter, this thread, the news for a while. It's making me really scared about what is happening and what is going to happen to loved ones. But people also think about your mental health here too. I am starting to dwell and think I need to step back from it a bit.

Take care everyone, and take precautions xx

Moderna are up near Boston, I think, and there are several thriving genetics companies there. I'd expect their work to be in association with MIT, across the river. They are part of a larger umbrella group of biotech companies - I doubt they are trying any manipulation, they're not that new.

Much of the research is done in small outfits focussing on a very small number of targets.
It’s based in Cambridge, just across the Charles River from Boston (where the vast majority of the biomedical and health research companies/organisations are situated in the area). I used to walk by it daily to get to my office when we were still based in Cambridge (before going to Boston, then full-time remote). If I recall correctly, based on a discussion I had with two of their managers at a function a few years ago, they’ve had long running backing from AstraZeneca and a few US government contracts, among other VC funding, as well as scalping some of the top biogeneticists and research scientists available, so I wouldn’t doubt they have the resources necessary to contribute substantially to the required research for a viable vaccine.

The 10 new UK victims were all aged over 60 and were in "the at-risk groups", said Professor Chris Whitty, chief medical officer for England.

They were being cared for by nine trusts including Buckinghamshire, Sandwell & West Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Leicester, Barts, London, north Middlesex and Chester.

Meanwhile, the UK's approach to combating COVID-19 has been questioned by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The UK's chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance said the government was not looking to "suppress" the disease entirely but to help create a "herd immunity in the UK" while protecting the most vulnerable from it.

He told Sky News around 60% of the UK population will need to become infected with coronavirus in order for society to have such immunity.

But WHO spokesman Margaret Harris said not enough is known about the science of the coronavirus, and that while "theories" can be talked about, the current situation demanded "action".
