COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Just watched a government minister on itv who was asked a really difficult question about ten times that he couldn't answer, question was should people go to the pub tonight.

It will go exactly as you said. It will be under some kind of control in the developed world meaning life will go back to some kind of normality. Then a second wave will hit and it will be lockdown again. Repeat 3/4 times until a vaccine is readily available in a year.
I'm prepared to isolate for a year if I could be sure a vaccine would be available by then. I'm not sure it would be though.

Yeah what they should realise is that they aren't special passes. They're just self-certificates everyone has (if you don't have it on you police will give you one for you to fill when they stop you) that says you're going shopping or to the pharmacy or buying a newspaper or walking the dog, and not going clubbing or playing cards with friends etc. Once you have that piece of paper signed it means you're aware of the consequences of lying; if they catch you going around without heading to one of the allowed destinations they can fine you or even jail you. So shopping is allowed as usual, you won't be shut at home to starve.

Yes I did realise that ;-) but I suppose that’s one strategy that might work in beating this virus. I was referring to the optics, you need to realise we only see the most grim looking scenes from Italy on Portuguese and English tv of deserted streets and people lining up a huge distance apart that’s nothing like what we still have here.

Am enjoying tuning in to your new show of ‘Apartment tenants have got talent’ singing and performing from the balconies.

For me travel companies etc are been a bit snide here, got an email from Ryanair who are through the goodness of their hearts dropping their rebooking fee so you can move your flight. However if you do that and you still can’t fly your travel insurance wouldn’t cover it as after 13 March Covid was not covered and food luck getting OLeary to refund you. I’d say to anyone with plans wait until they say you can’t go and get a refund, save the money for a holiday of a lifetime next year.

Too right. I think they're actually being more than a bit snide. We have a flight to Bilbao booked with EasyJet going out on 17th April. The government yesterday urged against all non essential travel abroad for 30 days and as luck would have it, our flight is 1 day after that elapses. Now of course that could be extended yet so far EasyJet have cancelled all flights to Spain up until March 29th only so as things stand if I decided not to go (and to be honest I've no intention of going given the current situation), I'd lose the flight money. It's not a great deal of cash (and luckily the hotel I've booked has free cancellation up until 14th April), and it's nothing compared to the whole Covid 19 situation but I think it's unfair that these airlines are still flying to various places which puts the onus on the customer to travel anyway, even if that place has strict restrictions when you get there.

I've also got a holiday to Malta booked in late June so it's the same situation with that one too. Like you, and refund issues aside, I'm happy to can the lot off until next year when this has hopefully abated and book something really decent.

Today this thread is set to surpass both the Rags and Dippers threads in number of pages.

That is possibly the most chilling statistic I have yet seen regarding Coronavirus.

Testament to the enduring newsworthiness of horror, plague and pestilence.

I know this is harsh on many. But I’ve had 3 holidays cancelled coz of this virus and couldn’t give a shit about it and will worry about money I’ve lost another time.
It’s just pure isolation mode now and keeping my pregnant wife safe for at least a few months.

The Guardian are cunts. I watched the whole of the committee meeting today. It was clearly explained why we were testing mostly in hospitals now, what we were doing before and what we will do in future as more tests become available.
Obrien is a shock jock in sheep's clothing.
Still have to sell papers and generate clicks.
Repeating something without skewing it to make it more clickable is a missed opportunity so the trick they all learnt re City prevails into life and death.

I have a flight booked with Easyjet on the 15th April.
So far they haven’t responded to yesterday’s travel ban extension but they were quite slow to refund me for a flight to Italy that was scheduled for next week but they did in the end.
I have other flights to Italy booked later in the year with them but I think there is a very good chance they won’t survive the summer, in which case I’ll lose the money.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm in total lockdown and isolation and we're establishing a daily routine much the same as you describe in your post, and I'm quite happy to keep this up for a sustained period.
I have however, started wondering about an exit strategy to all this. It would be pointless to isolate now only to emerge and be infected by a second wave. Do we keep this up until a vaccine is found , however long that might take?

So when would the right time be to safely rejoin society?

that is the question that has seen my daily sleep pattern halve over the last few weeks as I personally due to my mum and the way this virus spreads will have to make some potentially life changing/effecting decisions once they think it’s ok for the kids to go back to school as I know that if it’s in 1 month there’s no way this situation is done, it’s just mitigated but the original risks remain identical. There’s a lot of people in my situation way behind the curve on this situation it’s a matrix of multiple scenarios with elderly parents in the next few months and I’m very good at logistics planning, but this is going to be the challenge of my life.

Woke up about half 6 this morning put the news on and i was just hearing the phrase whatever it takes, trying to rack my brain where'd i'd heard something similar.

Yeah, there's the very real possibility of them going bust which could see us lose our money anyway. I've had the other half on to me this morning asking if we should check in for our flight (check-in opened this morning for it), and I'm wondering if it's the right or wrong thing to do but guessing it won't make any odds either way in terms of possible refunds etc?

I trundled to Tesco in the village last night with the dog. The chap said it had been utter bedlam all day with just unbelievable behaviour from customers. Luckily he seemed a little distracted by this and for two bottles of malbec, a bottle of milk and four croissants he only charged me £1.80!
Every little helps...

Have PHE decided on suppression or mitigation?

This is important because barring a significant mutation this defines where we are going with this.

Definitions:

R: The average number of secondary cases each case generates.
Suppression: Reduce R to below 1.
Mitigation: Reduce R but maintain above 1.

The option to take depends on vaccine production and ant-viral treatments. The latest news in that regards seems encouraging so the correct public health response should be to suppress this virus with every single measure available. We are not doing that. The isolation measures are voluntary. Schools remain open. How can they remain open? That's crazy because although it may not have a visible effect on children it spreads the virus through families and renders measures which parents make during their days almost useless. Keeping schools open whilst socially isolating risk groups would be a hallmark strategy for a mitigation effort.

I understand there are some drawbacks to closing schools such as losing key personnel but the bottom line is 'R'. That has to go down to below 1.

Why aren't we testing people with symptoms? The answer is because we do not have testing resources, and we do not have an incentive to do so because there is no forensic system in place to take that testing data and then follow-up contacts. Yet that is the most important defence strategy that a nation has. This is why is is the central WHO theme and yet none of the Western countries are doing this. Not a single one. That's because their health systems do no have the resources. Isn't that why we elect governments to allocate resources?

Tbf if i was 85 i would go to the pub, life is too short at that age to be stuck in wasting time, they have been through everything
Takes all sorts I suppose but I am in my 8th decade so I suppose if my life revolved around a pub I would think similarly but here in Spain we are all in lockdown so selfish habits that risk spreading the virus are ALL in place so no option.
Frankly, older people now have more company than ever here and someone to bring them the beer they will miss at the pub.
Just an opinion K..

Absolutely Mark. I'm not arsed in the grand scheme of things and this whole situation is way more important than the possibility of me losing a few hundred quid. In any case, if I can keep my job through this I'll probably save thousands by not going out to pubs, restaurants, and football matches so it's irrelevant anyway. The bigger issue is holidaymakers feeling that they're duty bound to go to areas where the virus is even more rife than it is here currently because airlines aren't cancelling their flights. It's unfair putting the onus on the the individual. A bit like the football before they had the common sense to suspend it - fans feeling that they have to turn up which in turn was increasing their chances of catching it. And let's not forget on that one that they only took that action once players, managers, etc, started to get it. They didn't give a shit about the fans.
