COVID-19 — Coronavirus

About ten (or maybe 20) years from now some clever lad or lass at university will do their research thesis on "Comparative levels of anxiety in British football forums about the coronavirus outbreak of 2020-21." (And perhaps relate it to the gloom & doom about their team's footballing fortunes.)
City will be at the top.
Who else will be in the top ten?
Someone like Fulham or Raith Rovers fans might have a more relaxed rating.
Not another bloody “Can you complete this survey for my thesis” thread!

vaccines don’t kill off anything...

Well a successful vaccine will give immunity to people which will prevent the spread of the infection from person to person, unlike now where it is spreading without a vaccine. It will not kill it entirely as the virus will be around for a good few years, but eventually it will be barely noticeable should a successful vaccine be found.

This is the worse thread on the internet.
I'm on loads of different sites covering various topics.
NONE are as paranoid and doom mongering than this one.
Some people need to take a break reading/posting for a few days.
For your own metal health as well as others...
I don't know mate, seems like you yourself are more sensationalistic than our average poster.
This video from inside an Italian hospital might upset you but we need to see it.

There were signs that the number of new cases in Italy were stabilising but they increased today. Their measures are having some effect. We need more encouragement for the health workers.

Surely it must begin to moderate soon. If you look at China curve and the date when Wuhan went into lockdown, the number of new cases starts to fall after about ten days. That was one City though. In Italy we have different regions all at different stages in the epidemic.

People in the UK need to see this to prepare for what we will see here. We need to see Italy recover somewhat so that we know that when it hits here in its full force that the period of suffering will be brief.

Wish I hadn't seen it, thanks for posting it though. At least I know about the belly-down procedure now.
I was not being rude m8 just I feel some posters are apprehensive of what they post as their worried about the reply’s they receive on here. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and I try and see things from every angle, think people are unsure what to post as the advice we are getting on tv changes hourly
I haven't seen people not being allowed to post their opinion. As for their reception, as you said everyone is entitled to their own ideas so they should be able to face mild confrontation when posting on a public forum. This one is a very polite and gentle thread as far as I can see. The football ones on this same site are far more rude for example lol

Family member has lost his job now.

Apparently the hotel would have kept him and paid him through insurance if they’d have banned restaurants/pubs/hotels.

That’s what they’ve told him anyway, not sure if true.

Why they’re still open is a fucking mystery.

You’d like to think it’s not for insurance purposes but what other reason could there be?

I really don’t know mate because our local has shut itself now, without the government ordering it.

They’ve done so for “everyone’s safety”.

This is really shit from the government if it’s insurance.

Which is what they should do then see what they can claim afterwards, instead there’s still many open, welcoming custom because they have too financially. If no one should attend these places enforce closures. Simple.

Analysts who have used modelling to determine the Covid-19 spread advise that the initial UK governments response to this virus would have resulted in 250,000 deaths in the UK using the herd mentality, but their change in stance this week and with further tougher measures as a country we can reduce this to 20,000 deaths. This is also largely dependent on how the public follow the advice given. So we are likely to see deaths in the region of 20,000 and 250,000 in the UK.

The peak is also determined to be not in May of this year but November/December when the virus returns after a dip this summer.

News of a vaccine being available soon, is not one that necessarily will work, but merely can be tested. There are no guarantees it will succeed in killing off this virus.

The way the modelling works is that live data is entered into

Thanks Blue Bogey The way that the modelling works is that it is not just case of adjusting the variables and that changes estimate for expected deaths. Underpinning the model is likely to be scenario planning where the “experts” have examined a range of scenarios (eg ventilator and PPE availability, screening policy or closed borders (or lack of them), policy on lockdowns, curfews etc, potential timescale for availability of drug remedies, parts of the population building up resistance etc).

Another factor is better informed / real information based on the experiences in China / Italy is being fed into the model and that will be replacing info on seasonal flu and maybe other pandemics. So the polices and the newer data are now forecasting UK deaths are likely to be closer to the 20k mark and not the 250 fatalities they were an earlier output from the model. These are estimates and the virus is relatively new so nobody really knows

From what I’ve read there are different options on when the virus is likely to peak.

There are lots of cafes, pubs that are doing a take away system to stay afloat, all food prepared and cook at home,if you can get out then use them and help small businesses stay afloat

Summer GCSE and A-level examinations have been cancelled.

What that means has been left very unclear and open ended at the moment.

But what a time for those who were about to sit them. They’ll have to show some good resilience and hope that their future places at college/university are secured still.

Was told today that if they had ordered pubs/clubs/restaurants/cinemas etc to close the insurance claims couldve closed Lloyds of london down where as leaving the pubs high n dry would be less catastrophic.

Dunno if true but makes sense

They’re going to have to do it anyway at some point aren’t they?

My daughter is doing her gcses in may.
Already been told they will have to use her mock results.
She got terrible results in her micks.
But since then her results at school have gone up massively...

Worrying time for her.
As it is for a lot of people

I few will be relieved.

Joking aside, I do hope the government quickly clarifies their comments that they will be doing everything possible to ensure this cancellation does not hinder those students’ studies and progression, though. Many students will have positions of various kinds contingent on GCSEs and A-Levels.

I agree. The poster is right though. Too many in this country are not going to do a thing. I unfortunately have had to leave the house the last few days to search for essential baby products that did not arrive with my home delivery of shopping. I’m walking around and if someone coughs (into their hand 100% of the time, the stupid pricks) someone will then joke with them “don’t forget to wash your hands!” And the other goes “haha yeah must remember to do it!” and they laugh it off. The whole thing is a fucking joke to people. Then you have a former WHO director on TV saying London will be Wuhan in under 2 weeks. Several hundred dying every day because there’s no ventilator. This is coming. And the stupid cünts in this country think it’s hilarious and not worth listening to advice.

And what’s going to happen with secondary school kids whose parents are at work? Are they going to stay in or are they going to get together with their mates and doss about? We know the answer. So many in this country are not going to give a shit until someone they love is dying infront of them. Then they’ll realise what they should have done. Only it’s too late then.

It’s very worrying times. I heard the guy from the WHO saying last week on Radio 5 Live that the Chinese had taken was following WHO recommendations, who had analysed pandemics for more about 70 years. That seemed very logical to me. I am but less convvinced by what the WHO appear to have been saying this week that the UK had all the info from China to inform our Government’s strategy sooner, when may observers didn’t have confidence in the Chinese information until recent weeks.

There is a lot of coverage in the news about bad behaviour and hoarding but loads are people are helping out the elderly with shopping and self-isolating (as you know). I think that’s covered in another thread so I won’t Labour the point.
