COVID-19 — Coronavirus

The testing is ramping up as quickly as possible and has been increasing since the first press conference by the 3 talking heads. This isnt like a pregnancy test where you can make it in a factory and anyone with a bladder can operate it. Every single sample that is collected has to be tested by a lab technician and we dont have a massive surplus of those doing nothing, waiting for a pandemic to start working. They're being converted from research, from running other tests that we need from day to day on the NHS etc.

I heard they are getting a test kit in a few days that can be done at home. It confirms if you have had the disease and therefore can't pass it on. Those people can then go back to work and mingle. The quicker they start this the better to start getting things moving again. It will be a start until they get an antidote that kills it and a vaccination to protect against it.

As for these private hospitals offering this to footballers and celebrities, the government should take them over as they would in wartime and get vital staff tested. Also for gp's and surgeons and the like, surely they can afford £375 for a test? Whether they should pay it is another matter but they are on decent money.

Boris Johnson's turning point.

We commonly describe growth of the virus as exponential but if it was exponential it would go on forever and we'd never reach that peak where it turns and decays.

Epidemics are more accurately described as a logistics curve. What we are interested in now is the point where the number of new cases today is less than the number of new cases the previous day. Of course it's never quite so simple because real data is never smooth and wobbles around a trend.

The turning point we're looking for is the inflexion point and we'll know it intuitively when the number of new cases levels off.

Some good news. It looks like a vaccine COULD be in limited operation in weeks!!!!

There are no buts that I can see. It does seem a legit story.

"If this looks good at protecting and we see no safety issues at all then, theoretically, after April, going into May or June, they could expand the number of people they are vaccinating and that could be into the thousands."

Researchers at Oxford University, led by Prof Sarah Gilbert, are planning a safety trial on humans of what is expected to be the UK’s first coronavirus vaccine next month. Provided that it goes smoothly, they will move directly into a larger trial to assess how effective the vaccine is at protecting against the infection.

There are two ifs in the above quote from the article you are quoting.
One is they don't know how safe it is and the other is that they don't know how effective it is.
The takeaway from that article seems to be that the government is prepared to relax approval procedures to get it into mass production and distribution in order to try and immunise the population.
I hope the vaccine is found to be safe and effective as soon as possible in order to save as many lives as possible

I’ve been looking at this issue closely as it’s naturally critical and as it underpins the strategy of the herd immunity idea. Copied the below on the latest from CNN experts from today Which casts doubt in my mind if once infected you would be safe to renter the workforce safely :-

Q. After recovering from coronavirus, does the recovered patient have immunity to the virus?

It’s too early to know for sure. But other coronaviruses, like ones that cause the common cold, might give us clues.

With “common cold coronaviruses, you don’t actually have immunity that lasts for very long, and so we don’t know the answer with this specific coronavirus,” said Dr. Celine Gounder, a professor of medicine and infectious diseases at the New York University School of Medicine.

“That’s actually going to be one of the challenges with designing a vaccine is how do you actually cause the immunity to last long enough to protect you.”

Fair comment. It's still good news. they must have good reason to believe it to be effective

Is there still fuck all for the self employed?

They urgently need to do something for leisure companies other than offering them loans.

Many bars and restaurants are staying open because they have absolutely no choice. It’s either continue to trade, or go out of business.

You can’t have a “avoid social gatherings” policy and expect bars, clubs and restaurants to foot the entire bill for it. A bar tender or a chef can’t work from home.

I appreciate there’s going to be some very difficult decisions all around, but unfortunately to stop people going out, you have to demand places of social gathering are closed. And if you demand they close, you have to help them financially so they don’t lose everything.
Sure you can wait one day.

I dont mind people being critical of anything or anyone involved in this but dont lie about what they said.

Johnson said we could be "on top of" it in 12 weeks, not that we would be "sorted".

And according to the ICL report we will be past the peak and on the downward slope managing the virus on 12 weeks time with the current controls in place and adhered to.

All you are doing is lying to further a political argument which doesnt belong in this thread.

Absolutely spot on with that last sentence sir. Quite a few posters willing to disregard facts in order to politicise this thread.

I am afraid you are right, there has been a GP on telly all week who had symptoms but can't get tested to see if she is clear to go back to work but celebs and footballers are getting the test no problem
Are they though? I’m very sceptical about that and think they are being used/paid to promote self isolation and social distancing because the weird cunts in our population are more likely to listen to some celebrity or footballer than they are a politician.

Italy’s numbers today.

3405 deaths / 41035 cases = 8.3% case fatality rate! That’s fucking scary as hell!

do you have links to the building of hospitals please?
Yeah that’s 83x more deadly than flu.

Scary numbers. Shows what happens when cases go above the health service capacity.

And I'll keep updating this, but I've been tracking Italian deaths for a few days and there does definitely seem to be a downward trend here. Not in the numbers of deaths per day, which is still going up. But the number of deaths as a percentage of total, does appear to be falling. This is somewhat encouraging at least.

God you posted that.

I've got email from wizzaiir that I could get a refund for cancelled flight but there is no fucking way I could find a refund link on their website. I read British Airways is doing the same. Fucking wankers.

No blind acceptance, no uncritical support from me - I just believe the government has followed scientific advice in good faith - crucially - the best available at the time it was given.
And imo imo some of the advice or interpretation of it has been wrong. And still is. I don't think it is "pathetic" to have said so, especially when it looks like what people like me were saying was right and that there has been a marked U-turn in strategy.
