Germany has moved from "testing to confirm" illness to "testing to get ahead of the situation". This is from German media who have seen an interior ministry briefing paper. They are following the South Korean model believing by far the most important measure to slow the virus is "testing and isolating infected people".

I hope eventually there will be some consensus around this. To get there we need technical solutions from the scientists to enable rapid testing. Germany plans to test 500k per week. If they can test that many then I guess we are already there.

It's not just about volume though. The tracing of contacts and subsequent testing is required too. This is WHO policy. We should implement it.

Why not source tests the way Ocado did for their staff, test the NHS workers who are ill, and then free the research institute / chemists, who were roped into test the health workers, to do mass testing?

Tough line for the police to tread. They don’t want to provoke rioting, which overstepping the mark runs the risk of. I fear it’s going to get even more like the Wild West out there.
