I can't believe anyone in the modern world still thinks this matters. Do you go around calling people "paki's", "japs" and "chinks" because Pakistan, Japan and China are only countries so it's not racist?

Racism is prejudice against someone based on their race, ethnicity, religion or nationality and has been defined as such for about 40 years.
Idiotic rationale isn’t it.

Seems like this thread's been infected by the Daily Mail.

Lots of people with these views don't read the Mail - my mrs would piss herself if I quoted anything from that nonsense (don't mind the sports section though). We are dealing with known knowns here, everything else in my opinion is a muddying of the waters by integrating Western response times with the calling out of the CCP (again - see SARS 2002 - They eventually admitted themselves they were lying). It's just one PR machine.

Oh I agree they are stupid pricks. But, especially with the Friday closing, they should have announced the pub closures on the Thursday night and that they wouldn’t open the following day. The scenes of pubs being busy on the Friday night were wholly preventable.
I don’t believe they were, whilst I understand some would say we are, but we are not a dictatorship.
If I’m able to not go in a pub since the 1st March because I could see what was going on then so are others.
Even more so when they were told why not to.
To disregard this is the fault of the people who went in, and no one else.

However we now seemingly live in a culture where people do not take responsibility for their own actions, whilst others support their recklessness by blaming someone else.

Trusting China or not is not a valid excuse for our modelling, lack of testing and preparation during February and early March, that's just a distraction soundbite from Gove. It's a worryingly effective soundbite, admittedly.

I’m not sure we’ll know the answer with any degree of certainty until the anti-body kit becomes widely available.
The chances he had it at that stage are beyond minute.

As I say, 80% of people tested for it right now that ARE presenting all the symptoms don’t have it. And that’s now, when it’s actually seemingly everywhere in society. So his chances of having it at Christmas are considerably lower than a lottery win I would say.

Brits, Afghans, Uzbeks, Kazakhs, Japs, Argies, Aussies, Saudis aren’t negative names.

Pakis is in Britain because it was used as a xenophobic slur that became seen as racist because it was used as a slur against all South Asian immigrants from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh... but it’s not in Australia.

Chinks, not heard that for years.

Xenophobia and racism are distinct.

It's two separate issues, but a key question is - what measures are going to take to ensure that the CCP do not do this again in future so that our kids are not going to go through this again in the next 10 years? We can make sure there are global responses that are more unified in future and that we have better equipment/facilities/staffing procedures and that there is international oversight on this being done, but you can't do anything in a situation when the host country misleads/withholds crucial scientific data about the nature of the virus for so long.

I'm not saying that the virus itself wasn't around in this country at Christmas - it's entirely possible that it was and some of us caught it back then if it's now thought that the earliest case was mid-November time - but what I'm saying is that the UK government weren't aware of the existence of the virus at the time. Your symptoms certainly square with those of Covid-19 and I'm glad you're ok now

if many thousands people are catching a new virus last year then you can bet the top people in this country knew about it. and to just hoped it would just go away then they was wrong ? even up to the first time the uk and the government lock down the streets and ask people to stay at home was at lease 2 weeks behind the rest of europe and silly of me to think the british people are not daft

Even as we speak, 90% of people being tested in hospital with Covid-19 symptoms right now don’t have it. They have other ailments or flu or bronchitis or pneumonia.

You didn’t have it then.

I have to laugh sometimes!! I can imagine you exercising then thinking I’ve got 10 minutes I’ll go on blue moon and wind them up, then oh shopping, back on blue moon then more wind ups etc etc:) keep safe blue

Unfounded my arse.

Already covered at great length a week ago in the Trump thread.

And racism doesn’t just have to be aimed at different races. CPS will do you based on nationality, race, ethnicity or religion so saying “Chinese aren’t a race” is complete bollocks.

It has a name, it’s Covid-19. The only people I’ve seen call it Chinese Virus since it was designated Covid-19 are Trump and his acolytes.

Time to rename Spanish Flu?

it was not flu or a chest infection or bronchitis ? as for pneumonia its a secondarily infection that is normally because by the 3 others

It’s just one of my pet peeves at the minute. Every fucker I speak to in the U.K. thinks they’ve already had it as they had a bad flu or cough in the last four months.

Per the CPS:

  • Was there any use of derogatory language towards ethnicity, race, nationality or religion, (including caste, converts and those of no faith.

So you see, “Chinese” not being a race doesn’t matter one jot.
I’m not even arsed. It was just in answer to someone asking if it was racist to call it Chinese fever and I even said “I’ve barely heard anyone call it that anyway”. I’m far from saying it should be called that.

Xenophobia is distinct from racism because when two people from the same race are prejudice towards each other’s countries it can’t be racism.

There are three main races in China and 56 different ethnicities.

I would also like to just mildly add that I deliberately edited my initial post, to indicate Han ethnicity, and so dispel the ambiguity. Or so I hoped.
More importantly, on the question of nomenclature. Scientists now know that AIDS originated in Africa, and they've traced the first case back to the 1950s, amazingly enough. Absolutely nobody calls it African AIDS, or Great Lakes AIDS, which was the originating area. Correct me if I'm wrong, but even at the time I don't remember anyone in authority calling it African or Great Lakes AIDS, when it first hit the west big time in the 80s. The Chinese people have suffered more from the CCP's fuck-ups than anyone on this planet. And on a scale involving millions of deaths. Just read Jun Chang or any other serious historian of modern China.
