In the note, delivered to people with life-limiting illnesses, such as incurable cancer and motor neurone disease, Llynfi Surgery in Maesteg, South Wales, also said that completing the DNACPR (do not attempt CPR) form had "several benefits"

It claimed doctors and family and friends would know not to call 999 if a loved one's condition worsened, and therefore not use up "scarce ambulance resources", and risk transmitting COVID-19 to others

It said people with life-limiting illnesses were at much higher risk of the virus, and were "unlikely to be offered hospital admission", and "certainly will not be offered a ventilator bed".

It ended by saying: "We will not abandon you, but we need to be frank about what the next few months holds for us."

On Wednesday, Cwm Taf University Health Board said the letter was not a health board communication and that the surgery was apologising to patients for causing "distress", saying that was not their intent.

A spokesman for Cwm Taf said: "A letter was recently sent out from Llynfi Surgery to a small number of patients.

"Staff at the surgery are speaking to those patients who received the letter to apologise directly and answer any concerns they may have

Very much a worry for the elderly. My Dad's OK as the family make sure he has what he needs. However he is stubborn and wants to still do things for himself. He has no Internet and has never used a computer in his life. So after hearing of a government package for the vulnerable he decided to phone the relevant number to apply. Dad is 87, is terminal with stage 4 cancer and is the primary carer of mum who is 86 with dementia and COPD . He was told that he wasn't in the vulnerable category as he wasn't on chemotherapy. We will make sure he is fine, but there must be many in a similar situation with no family.

Get onto his GP and get him to put him onto the vulnerable list,it is ridiculous he is not on it,hope they ,you and the family stay safe. X
 
It seems doe to the sheer numbers they have to deal with their are thousands unreported deaths in Italy...Wall Street Jiurnal

He did that sadly and that was what he was told. There is 3 of us watching out for him so he will be OK. We've isolated ourselves for weeks so we do visit and stay over. None of us have any kids at home anymore so we should be safe to care. Hope you are good also and your family.

He is very lucky he has a good family,only got my brothers now,neither are well but both have wives so they are ok,nobody i know has caught the virus yet

Population density is also a big factor in infection spread. There's a good reason why cities are hit hardest and also in Italy whole families (including the elderly) live together making it worse.

Italy - 206 people per sqkm
UK - 272 people per sqkm
Sweden - 64 people per sqkm
 
It's been a bloody awful day and we're now paying for poor decisions and poor choices made by the government and the public early on. Things like the Cheltenham festival going ahead and then the public choosing to go to it should weigh heavily upon them.

Feels like the country is drowning.


We need testing. So much more testing. Only way we get these numbers down. NHS need so much more PPE as well.
 
Guardian reporting BMA as saying that “Stable coronavirus patients could be taken off ventilators in favour of saving those more likely to survive...as the UK braced for the outbreak to reach 1,000 deaths a day by the end of the week.”
Neither Spain nor Italy has reported 1,000 deaths in a day. Unimaginable horrors awaiting medical staff.

We need more ventilators,we had a month maybe longer to get them done,other countries have got their hands on some more,making the above choice shouldn't be needed at this point,i am disgusted with our response to this
