COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Read the piece, they are being discounted they are not going to be tested and will not be a part of the figures. So ergo they are being manipulated.

That seems to be the case in many countries. The sheer shortage of testing kits means that such deaths will not be recorded, and the more bodies pile up, the louder the cry will come from families that they be buried. We’ll ultimately have an incomplete understanding of the situation.

I hope they are using a scrap scheme to sell those cars I can’t see many takers in the world for them at the moment. The car industry was decimated in 2008 I would imagine the same but worse this time around.
World-wide economic output is going to be decimated but German industry (Mercedes and BMW) are now reporting a rebound in demand in China. See link for details. https://www.thelocal.de/20200408/coronavirus-daimler-to-restart-german-factories-from-april-20th

How wide will the trough in economic activity be? No one knows at this stage.

Didn’t they say yesterday that they’re holding off that announcement until Boris is back fit and well?

Sunday is the final day of the original three week lock down though. If he's in intensive care now, he won't be fit by Sunday. Somebody will have to tell us what's happening beyond then. We all know we're looking at least another couple of weeks so they may as well tell us.

My guess is the end of May will be the earliest restrictions will start to be lifted.

True bud, very true. My fear is that a lot of these elderly people are dying without even being put on ventilators and are dying a death with just pain relief, from what I have read about it it isn't a pleasant way to go either. My other worry is that discounting people because of their age is abhorent even if we take into account that as you say testing kits are at a premium.

I'd be pretty amazed if it was that long.

This is our peak week, it was always going to be with the nearly 3 week lag. It should last into next week because there'll be a wave of people who caught it off their family in the first week of lockdown, but after that it should drop off quite steeply as we see the effect of 80% of the country locked inside.

I think they'll begin to lift things around the end of April.

I live in a small town in the north east. Lock down pretty much adhered to round here. Local facebook pages have photos of small groups of kids gathering and some naming and shaming going on. Seems to be doing the trick but not everyone happy. Could turn nasty I guess.
Teenagers are a problem around here too, where the fcuk are their parents ?
Probably on Facebook crying about how difficult it is to keep their little Michael or Mary in the house

Lancashire police have also caught the two men spotted on CCTV licking their hands and smearing them all over fruit & veg, packs of meat and fridge door handles in a Sainsbury's.

Should be forced to change bedding in hospitals as part of their punishment. Get them front line, they won't think it's funny then.

Was reading a piece from the United States that said coroners in certain areas had run out of testing kits, so any number of deaths were having to be waived through even if they suspected Covid-19 to have been a mitigating factor.

I would imagine that in the coming weeks people will wake up to the fact that care homes are as dangerous as cruise ships. Philosophically, I think we as a society may have to review our priorities; it sits uneasily with me that we consider ourselves all in this together and feel good when we trot out to clap the NHS, yet we have locked nearly half a million of our most vulnerable in poorly equipped places where they are physically and emotionally trapped.

While out on my one daily exercise crossed with picking up prescription, I was surprised to see so many people milling about (people in their late 60's, 70's) and road traffic was pretty damn high during work hours, it was like a sunny weekend day FFS. Lock down will last much longer as it isn't sinking in for many.

This was an excellent intro from Emily Maitlis on Newsnight last night:

I certainly think in terms of the public sector, consideration should be given to temporarily reducing the wages of some public sector workers who are presently working from home (as many local authority workers presently are, for example) whose expenditure will have decreased in the last few weeks and giving it to front-line public sector workers who are putting their lives on the line. It seems iniquitous to me that both parties’ present income is unaffected by this situation.

I know people in the private sector whose ‘earnings’ have halved who are no worse off than before because they aren’t going out, won’t be going on holiday this year etc.. No reason to think a similar pattern doesn’t subsist among certain public sector workers - and the move would be fiscally neutral.

Should hold them for a week or 2 and blag it that they will be facing attempted murder charges.

Fortitude and strength of character are important in overcoming this disease despite what Maitlis' scriptwriters say.
How do fortitude and strength of character stop you catching the disease? You missed the point. Low-paid workers are more likely to get it than cabinet ministers (despite their efforts to ignore their own guidelines).

Honestly think we are nowhere near peak as of yet and we are in for the long haul here fighting this.

The issue facing them and us is what happens once we are all let out again?

Right now id say we infect each other and that is why the lockdown will continue.

Good post Gabriel. It’s not just care homes that are more at risk areas of society. Northwick Park, the NHS Trust where people with the virus exceeded the ICU capacity to care for everyone has what seems to be the perfect Coronavirus storm of poor people working / living in close proximity, a large percentage of lower skilled workers who can’t work from home and a high mix of ethnicity.

I agree - mid May at best, and quite possibly the end of May. We are still several days away from peak - 13th was suggested by Hancock - but obviously that is not certain. And the idea that 2 weeks later we'd be out of lockdown and things returning to normal, is fanciful IMO.

FYI, Italy's peak (daily new cases) was nearly 3 weeks ago, and yet their figures have not halved yet. That might give people an idea of how long this will take to drop back down once we've peaked.

Went on my usual walk last night around 6pm and went through Chadderton Park in Oldham.
5 Teenagers sat on a bench with cans sat next to each other!
Obviously they think they are invincible !
Was very tempted to say something but wife said I would probably get battered!!
What world do these idiots live in??
