If the 2nd wave is bigger than the first wave, then Dominic Cummings won’t have a choice.

There will be public outrage.

If the public aren't outraged now (and plenty aren't), I don't think they will be next time round. And if the public start questioning decisions, they'll just roll out the Queen again and put on a bit of Vera Lynn. Keep calm and carry on.

How exactly are they going to do that? A second wave will become fairly obvious if ICU wards start filling up, do you think NHS doctors are going to keep quiet if that happens and the authorities try to suppress or manipulate information?
They will just constantly shift the goal posts and thresholds will change from what he said last Sunday. They will use The Mail and other favoured media outlets to persuade the public that the shifting of the goal posts hasn't actually occurred.

We are on the way down the slide. The decision to ease measures was never likely to create an outrage at this point. Some mumblings of discontent perhaps, but nothing that would force the hand of a government.

Not locking down if the 2nd peak is worse, would be akin to coming out of lockdown 6 weeks ago or not bothering to enter one at all. Can you imagine the reaction of joe public had we done either of those things? I can, and it’s why neither happened.

The scenarios are miles apart imo.

The official Death statistics will be out in June, the returns cannot be faked and we will be able to see how good the figures are by comparing with previous years.

the last ones were for March but I didn’t notice the figures. I’ve got confidence in the official figures for births marriages and deaths.

think I need to.get back to the football threads:))

update on my relative she is able to follow neural requests with her eyes she really is trying to fight this illness here’s hoping.

Not necessarily agreeing that there will be manipulation of the data but some of the press and the bots on social media appear to be doing an effective job at making health workers out as Labour Party activists who are interested in point scoring at the Govt's expense. Thus, I think doctors and nurses speaking out would be white noise to some.

Family get together next door in their garden, my Mrs is going mental but i've told her to just ignore it as we're not the covid-19 police.
Bit scary though when you realise one of them is a nurse & one is a phlebotomist, i wouldn't want them treating an elderly relative of mine .

we’re not far off from half the country still in a fearful lockdown state and the other half that couldn’t care now

Tbf I was referring more to other measures i.e. the lack of action on flights from Wuhan/Rome etc and the mass gatherings being allowed for so long plus the failure to test care home patients etc not causing widespread public outrage rather than the easing of the lockdown. If the Gov't held out against those measures, I think they could pretty much decide to do what they want with regards to a second lockdown. I think in difficult times, and especially when you invoke the language of war/national pride, a lot of people unquestionably support those in charge which in many ways gives them total control. We will see anyway, it will be interesting but hopefully the contact tracing measures being worked on now might avoid a second peak.

there's something in the human psyche that turns people into selfish cunts.

But oh well, Covid waits for no man.
We've been out this afternoon to have a walk somewhere else. There's a newish shared path/cycle track been built between our town and another, it also connects to a NT manor house. It was relatively busy, with people and families out running, walking, and cycling, and 'cyclists', we must have passed 150 people in a couple of hours, and without doubt there are some selfish twats who ride bikes. The family types were fine, all behaving well, and keeping the 2m apart as best they can, but some of the cyclists were a disgrace, riding this shared space like its the tour de france, and not caring one jot about young kids or older folk, speeding past within inches of them, one woman on foot was nearly knocked into the ditch at the side by an idiot riding at about 30 mph from behind her, no warning given, why are they not on the road ? There weren't many, maybe 10, but most were complete bellends.
