I think a statue in a town centre of someone who was a slave trader should be taken to a museum, there’s no need to do anything with buildings as they actually serve a proper purpose, as opposed to remembering someone or being there to be aesthetically pleasing. It’s also a waste to get rid of a building.

I don’t think we should be doing it right across the country as a campaign but if the locals want it out of their town centre, stick it in a museum.

I think in Russia / Mongolia they have done similar with communist era monuments - moved them all to a big park which forms a sort of memorial. Happy balance between glorification and whitewashing of history. I'm not sure chucking Colston in a river quite strikes the same balance.

The stats she uses omit the number of arrests made and incidents of harrasment in the black community from the police and she uses only stats that support her and half truths.

She has the right to not support BLM movement somthing she has opposed for years, but her arguement is basically he was a criminal so police did their job and this was an unfortunate death or a criminal in custody.

The protests are about a lot more than that.

My question is, what are the protestors hoping to achieve from being on the streets right now? According to the law, everybody is equal. of course that isn’t the case in practice but there’s no immediate changes to be made to end racism. the problem is deep rooted institutionalised discrimination, that doesn’t just end over night. the answer is education, particularly to our young so that they’re not brought up with these kind of discriminatory views ingrained into them and waiting for a generational shift. all of that takes time and being on the streets during a pandemic substantially increasing the risk of spreading the virus does absolutely nothing to quicken that process. Yes they’re raising awareness by taking to the streets but there’s other ways to do this nowadays. Most people view social media as much if not more than they do the news or papers, they can show their support on there for now without helping to spread the virus

Many soviet statues were pulled down and destroyed at the fall of the Union, most left discarded in landfill or wasteland, it was then some enthuiast that searched and collected many that survived and put them in places,also many beleived such memorials especially of those that were in park dedicated to those sacrificed in WW2 should be kept and not destroyed

Manchester very own great statue of Engels took a few years to find as they scoured eastern europe for one in good condition to restore
