Keir Starmer

"nowt much we can do anyway"

That just about sums up the putrification of UK politics. We can have any government we want as long as that government does nothing different to the status quo and anything deemed unacceptable will be widely ridiculed by the combined forces of the RW media, traduced as reactionary or hard left or both and all means of propaganda fair or foul will be used to enforce that status quo.

Are we seeing the UK become akin to the decadence of Rome, with the decline of virtue, family, dignity and social responsibility

“The Rome he has been trained to serve, the Rome of Augustus and Germanicus, was gone. In its place stood Neronopolis, ruled by a megalomaniac brat.”

The above quote was from Senecus at the court of Nero

"The England he has been trained to serve, the England of Churchill and Atlee , was gone, In its place stood Johnsonopolis, ruled by a melgolmaniac

The above is my own modern interpretation of that quote
Nice to see you posting on here more regularly Rascal. I genuinely hope you dont feel too down about all this crap and politics at the moment. Similarly I also hope others on here dont feel too low, including those that clearly dont think much of some of my views. Life's too short. Your political views remind me very much of a very good friend of mine. Hes an arsenal supporter by the way and not a blue.

A raging lefty and a gooner and he’s still your friend? You’re a better man than me ;-)

Cheers pal, I am not down, I am just exasperated that politics is in such an horrendous place. Only 27% of the public think Johnson is not a liar, yet people will still support him, the Lib Dems have all but disappeared not that it in anyway causes me any grief and the Labour party is falling apart and has been claimed by the Blairite right and is purging us on the left as it reaffirms its Blairite stance.

My last hope is that once Brexit is done and dusted, the good people of this country come to their senses and get rid of the lying **** Johnson for good, because he will hopefully have outlived his usefullness to the cause. Then maybe we can move on from the tribalism and division Brexit has caused and get back to looking at politics through a prism that has nothing to do with a persons particular brexit stance.

Who would have thought that a forest of magic money trees actually existed.

Never in our history was so many lies told by so few to so many.

As you have said many times, the UK will never run out of money.

To be fair the money isn’t there and we’re going to have to pay for it later.

This is the sort of answer that really exasperates me.

Spend some time on you tube watching maybe Mark Blyth or Dr Richard Wolff and take in what they say. Blyth is especially brilliant on austerity and the myths that surround it, like having no money. Then I don't have to write another long post explaining why what you say is wrong.

I wasn’t making an argument for austerity, when I say “we’re going to have to pay it back” I mean the UK as a whole, lead by the government.

The government can increase borrowing, raise taxes, or cut spending and I wasn’t making an argument for either at this point.

I actually don’t think they’ll go with austerity but we’ll have to wait and see.

They already are. Most of the austerity policies were mediated through local councils and they are already £10bn down on the £3.8bn the government has given them for Covid-related costs and lost income.

Trouble is, lots of people won’t have it because they’ve had to completely buy into it. If somehow they accept they’ve been conned on anything they’ll have to accept they’ve likely been conned on everything. I’d expect entrenchment to become more pronounced in the short term.

Doesn't like Slave Trader statues but wants them legally removed - wonder which other undesirables he'll approve the destruction of monuments for next - George Washington, Clive of India, Cecil Rhodes, Rudyard Kipling, Winston Churchill....Maggie Thatcher?

It's a fairly reasonable argument to be opposed to statues which celebrate slavers.

He's really come out all guns blazing supporting the protestors.

Oh wait....He's still waiting for his focus group to tell him how to react. Along with Nandy refusing to call Trump a racist. We're moving back to the era of nice slogans do fuck all to upset anyone.

After talking to his mates he's decided to condemn the protesters who removed a statue glorifying slavery.

Good work Mr Starmer.

I think his statue was not intended to celebrate that aspect of his career but different and currently less fashionable qualities.

Hmm, the theft of human beings. Men, women and children branded on their chests to show his ownership. Crammed in conditions that animals wouldn't be transported in resulting in deaths between around a fifth of the total. And that's described as a career!

Then to object to the removal of his image from the pedestal his statue had been given.

put (or place) someone on a pedestal
Give someone uncritical respect or admiration; treat someone as an ideal rather than a real person.

Yes, there are certainly more who need to go the same way.
