I try not to respond to you - but that post has made me LOL and break my pledge

Here's a cogent response to that demonstration of an utter lack of any understanding of how to negotiate……..

You simply haven't even got the rudimentary basics of a fucking clue about negotiations - and that post is (yet another) clear demonstration of that fact

How can you not understand something that is so obvious - ROFL - and you have some Remainer colleagues that express the same level of 'understanding'

If I was as conceited as Bob I might consider doing some missionary work - perhaps if it was another poster

Bless
If I compiled all your replies to me into a book it would be titled "101 ways to avoid a simple question and blame the questioner for asking it".

I can't even see a direct link to negotiations in my post, but I'm guessing from previous comments:
you think the UK side is false about the importance of fishing and we'll give it up for something more important. Mind you, even if that guess was right, you'd not admit it.

If you were to compile my replies to you over the last 6 months into a book...….

a) it would be a very small book

b) an appropriate title would be something like...

"The responses that I get when people decide that I am not worth taking the time to reply to"

I did check. 300 replies to me in the last year...

And still nowt of substance about fishing.

Not a regular topic in the Dog and Duck in the ancient cirque port of Wokingham?

UK fishing - insignificant part of our economy not worth getting excited about, yet crucial to the EU apparently? Something smells of fish.
It's very important to the EU's maritime nations that fish what would be "our" waters. They would possibly have many redundancies and boats laid up, and prices of fish would rise in the EU because (if we tried to catch the fish they don't) there's no guarantee we'd be able to land it in EU ports (and unless Brits start eating herring we don't want it in British ports). And although the big companies in Scotland think they could expand, it would be with foreign crews.

(Conversely, some think that the UK could expand the fishing fleet and, with our attitude of not being bothered about treaties, the end result would be we end up overfishing the seas and damage the ecosystem.)

However I am grateful that, unlike the coward who avoids these issues, you have at least asked why it is an issue.

Some of the Remainers bang on about how "...fishing is not a big part of the UK economy..." - so why bother with it......….

Seemingly not asking themselves - just why are several EU countries pressing the EU to make it a 'Red Line'

From a negotiating POV (and shock / horror - we are in a period of negotiation guys)!!

It is really a big positive to OWN something that the other party have a major requirement / need for - yet some of the Remainers just want to give it away

Pretty basic stuff - but when people fail to understand things that are so obvious - and then claim to be 'knowledgeable' - it is quite funny

Very sensible answer to the question from you , from experience when I lived on the continent herring was a big thing especially in Holland and the West of Germany where I lived. They roll it on a cocktail type stick bloody savages LOL

Yeah - savages....

I used to live and work in Holland - rollmops is a big thing over there

Whilst I got a taste for it - I go back to the days when - after doing a pub crawl on a Friday or Saturday night in Salford - I was helped in my recovery the next morning with a packet of kippers in butter bought from the 'fish man' at some time during the pub crawl

Happy days

Fish isn't my thing I hate the stuff, give me a prime Fillet steak from a Cow in a field somewhere in the UK and I am happy.

Trying hard to isolate a point of substance amid all the usual verbose abuse....

Two questions then.

What would we want in exchange for agreeing fishing quotas in our waters (which is a treaty obligation anyway to prevent overfishing and which we seem willing to do on an annual basis)?

And do we not want continued access for our seafood exporters to EU markets?

(I'm actually more sympathetic to Cornish and west coast Scottish small boat fishermen looking to secure their EU market than the rich owners of much of our quotas on the east coast - and half of English quotas are foreign owned. I can't see how we could expand the fleet without more foreign ownership and/or foreign crews.)

I grilled 10 fresh sardines for my tea tonight - enjoyed with a bit of crusty bread - luvverly jubberly - Morrissons are great for meat and fresh fish at the moment as they are buying up the stuff that would go to restaurants and into catering. You can get a housebrick sized chunk of cheddar for a fiver....why anyone is queuing 5 miles for a KFC or a Maccies is fucking beyond me... the nations diet should have massively improved through this pandemic if people have bought and cooked fresh

This week I purchased 8 Langoustines for £4.75, Delivered direct to my door 6 hours after they were caught fresh from the ocean. They were probably the nicest thing I have eaten this year. We do not deserve the bounty that is on our doorstep. The vast majority of those Langoustines end up in French, Spanish and Italian restaurants and are so valued by our European friends and neighbours. Unfortunately until we learn to appreciate what we have, their only value is as a bargaining chip in a bigger game.

Truly a national tragedy that as an island nation we mainly eat bland processed white fish in crumbs / batter. Don't get me wrong, I love a good chippy tea, but there is a lot more to seafood, and it's sad that you are probably more likley to get British fresh fish in the middle of Spain than in some of our coastal towns. Not really a brexit comment btw, just lamenting the national diet.

Both on a micro and macro level I agree with you. Until we learn how to gut, dress, prepare fish and shellfish it will be fish and chips and fish fingers for tea whilst so much that is wonderful is exported to those that value it.

Last time we played Grimsby the chippy ran out of fish. We mocked the fact that Grimsby could run out of fish and got a tirade about how it was all mostly now landed in Hull.

and there you have the rub - I have often said that those folk you see on telly saying that fresh food is unobtainable or too expensive are using those words to hide from the fact that they find it too labour intensive. I had to slit open my sardines and pull the guts out - the lass on the fishmongers counter even said "urgh they have their heads on !! " We have become a nation of people who would rather have food that takes 5 mins and then "ping" so that it doesn't get in the way of Tipping Point or simply use the Just Eat app.

As for cost the sardines were £1.00 - daylight fucking robbery you'll agree !

I must admit I was surprised to see a harbour side restaurant in Menorca advertising Dublin prawns.

Not sure most folk here would know what to do with a whole fish unless they are fishermen nowadays. This is making me want to buy a few tomorrow and force my kids to clean and gut them just so I don't contribute two more citizens to the KFC generation.

But it really couldn't be simpler could it? Open the cavity and scoop out the innards. Wash and done. If the head bothers you cut it off - same with the tail. What I describe is a few minutes work.
