They would possibly have many redundancies and boats laid up, and prices of fish would rise in the EU because (if we tried to catch the fish they don't) there's no guarantee we'd be able to land it in EU ports (and unless Brits start eating herring we don't want it in British ports). Very sensible answer to the question from you , from experience when I lived on the continent herring was a big thing especially in Holland and the West of Germany where I lived. (Conversely, some think that the UK could expand the fishing fleet and, with our attitude of not being bothered about treaties, the end result would be we end up overfishing the seas and damage the ecosystem.)

Whilst I got a taste for it - I go back to the days when - after doing a pub crawl on a Friday or Saturday night in Salford - I was helped in my recovery the next morning with a packet of kippers in butter bought from the 'fish man' at some time during the pub crawl

Truly a national tragedy that as an island nation we mainly eat bland processed white fish in crumbs / batter. Don't get me wrong, I love a good chippy tea, but there is a lot more to seafood, and it's sad that you are probably more likley to get British fresh fish in the middle of Spain than in some of our coastal towns. Not really a brexit comment btw, just lamenting the national diet.This week I purchased 8 Langoustines for £4.75, Delivered direct to my door 6 hours after they were caught fresh from the ocean. They were probably the nicest thing I have eaten this year. We do not deserve the bounty that is on our doorstep. The vast majority of those Langoustines end up in French, Spanish and Italian restaurants and are so valued by our European friends and neighbours. Unfortunately until we learn to appreciate what we have, their only value is as a bargaining chip in a bigger game.
Both on a micro and macro level I agree with you. Last time we played Grimsby the chippy ran out of fish. Not sure most folk here would know what to do with a whole fish unless they are fishermen nowadays. This is making me want to buy a few tomorrow and force my kids to clean and gut them just so I don't contribute two more citizens to the KFC generation.and there you have the rub - I have often said that those folk you see on telly saying that fresh food is unobtainable or too expensive are using those words to hide from the fact that they find it too labour intensive. I had to slit open my sardines and pull the guts out - the lass on the fishmongers counter even said "urgh they have their heads on !! " We have become a nation of people who would rather have food that takes 5 mins and then "ping" so that it doesn't get in the way of Tipping Point or simply use the Just Eat app.
As for cost the sardines were £1.00 - daylight fucking robbery you'll agree !
