Not a chance.
The only extension that could happen will be in the form of a temporary treaty with no tariffs or inspections and with no money being paid to the EU (or getting any money back)... and only then if an overarching deal can be agreed that allows the detail to be fleshed out in the following 12 months.

Tend to agree. We might want a “free customs area” or whatever we’ve tried to dress up another extension as, but can’t see the EU willing to play along again. (Unless of course it comes with budgetary contributions)
 
I strongly suspect that the EU 27 are continuing their No Deal preparations to the point where come the end of the month if this lot go through with the threat to disengage they will just say "bye - good luck" or even if they are better placed than us midnight the 30th June they will announce talks are no longer to take place. Best way to negotiate - turn your oppositions guns back onto them - pre-emptive strike. They can hardly argue the No Deal that the Tories seek is a dastardly EU plot.

Haven't been on Twitter but a sensible move if true.

Don't give a shit what they call it, we are not and will not be ready to exit on 31st Dec. We should take the full 2 years. It won't be long enough but better than what we are currently facing.

This could well be the first sensible move Johnson's Government has made.

Let's see.

Ah that’s what we are doing, ‘negotiating’. I kind of assumed we were just painting ourselves into a corner, insisting on unfeasible deadlines and unrealistic conditions, and then wetting ourselves when the clock ticked down to zero.

Personally I would call it ‘mind numbing stupidity’ rather than ‘negotiating’ but each to their own I guess.

Unfeasible deadlines and unrealistic conditions yet you're all in favour of Japan laying the law down and setting a strict and short time frame?

You are 100% against brexit so im not in any way surprised by your stance Bob but it wont stop me pointing a bit of hypocrisy out when i see it ;-)

Oh dear, I did wonder if you would go there. The six week deadline is, I’m afraid, a UK deadline. I’ll take you through it.

The UK has insisted that there where will be no transition extension which means we need a deal with Japan by 1st January. We have also told Japan that we want an ambitious deal and want to remove the agricultural barriers they have in place for UK products.

Japan have come back and said if it has to be done by 1st Jan (a UK choice) then realistically we have six weeks as it has to be voted on and ratified etc. Additionally as we only have six weeks because you, the UK, want it done by the 1st Jan, it will have to be limited, not ambitious, and also contain some goodies for us otherwise it ain’t happening.

So to recap. The unrealistic deadline of six weeks is a self imposed negotiating deadweight, a deadweight that we cheerfully strap ourselves too and then wonder why we keep drowning.

You have actually just explained yourself there that it is Japan that have imposed the six week limit as their condition for meeting the six month timeframe set by the UK. I'm all for pointing out the UK govt intransigence in brexit/trade negotiations, but your blindness to similar by the EU is an illness unless you are aware you are doing it deliberately. Get help.

Carry on applauding the EU and others whilst bemoaning the UK for doing the exact same things though Bob.

Japan isn’t in the EU.

The six weeks is a consequence of the UK deadline. Solution. Drop the end of year deadline and the UK can then sit down with Japan and negotiate a more ambitious and coherent trade deal. The six months is the source of the problem. The six weeks merely the bastard offspring sired by hubris.

Okay. I see we are going to have to break this down into tiny steps.

UK wants deal in six months. Japan say need time to discuss, vote, ratify etc within that six months. This means we have six weeks negotiating time. Japan say this means we can’t discuss anything contentious. Has to be limited. Also say UK are ones in big hurry not us so need lots of sweeties to make Japan happy.

Solution. Drop six month deadline and all these issues fade away.

Conclusion. Stop imposing unrealistic deadlines on ourselves.

You dont have any solutions Bob other than for the UK to capitulate at every corner and ultimately remain in the EU.

Thankfully we now know that isn't an option.

Thanks for your insight into our trade negotiations though even if they are shall we say.... a tad one sided and biased at times.
