Running thread

Did some running last year, culminating in the Manchester Half in October, took me just under 3 hours due to some ankle issues.

Anyway, since the start of this year, I have made a big change in eating and exercise habits..... dropped a stone and a half, and since lockdown walked on average 140km a month, mainly around the hills near Mottram, Tintwistle, Woodhead pass.

32 mins to do 5k in March, and on Saturday got that down to 27:34

I have only run 4 times since March, but the walking has helped with the fitness, and carrying 10kg less in weight makes it so much easier.

I used to feel a bit demoralised last year when I wasn’t seeing much improvement in running, but making the effort to improve diet has been the big difference.

I’ve done a 20:50 at Worsley woods, only time I’ve gone under 21 and I’m 51, was 50 at the time. Doubt I’ll ever go under 20 unless I can find 3 miles downhill
That's an excellent time and beyond me now I think. My PB as a senior back in the day was 19:10 but only did two 5k races. My PB of 37.30 for 10 K was a better result I think.

Great stories on here.
Missed running when I ended up at the gym after a labral tear (apologies as I have mentioned this before) but during lockdown I've re engaged with it.
Never really got a definitive answer for running with that tear. I had MRI scan but decided not to operate...and I'm go glad I didn't in the end. Some great advice on labral tears coming out now and not enough known about them. Initially I was told if I had to run then I should run on soft ground...which is way harder than it sounds. In periods of dry weather the ground becomes really hard and uneven...so much potential damage to your body. When it's raining you're just running in wet mud. In winter it's simply too dark to run in fields...has to be pavements for me.
The last surgeon I spoke to before discharge suggested that the latest advice was to carry on running to stimulate blood flow to the hip area. Also to start core training and build up the glutes et al (hence why I joined the gym). Built up a bit of muscle, got my ass back (lost through running) and the pain from the labral tear is all but gone. What I have noticed recently during the upping of running activity is I get sore hips if I run 2/3 days consecutively. but maybe that's just lack of running training.

I'm 47 never been fitter, stronger, healthier and I'm determined to get a sub 20 when the Park Runs return (record is 20:49 a year or so back).

Btw....there's a runner I know along the Mersey - early 50's and regularly gets 18 min park run times (17 on the flatter courses)....nuts!

Been trying to find ways to get my 9 year old boy doing more. He's really into his swimming but obviously thats a no go at the moment so running it is. He'd never run before properly so set him a challenge for June of 30 miles in 30 days and helped him raise sponsorship for a local charity. Its really motivated him and he ran 5 miles on friday without breaking sweat hardly (10 minute miles) and just done 3 miles with him this morning at 9:30 min miles. He's really enjoying the challenge and raised £600 quid for charity. Hoping once things settle down he keeps it going and we can start doing a few park runs together when they get going again.

First incomplete run since I started outdoors running over 2 weeks ago. On Sunday I completed my longest run so far at just over 6k. Did a shorter 3k run yesterday morning, but when I went out at teatime to do a longer one, I only managed around 3k before stopping and walking for much of the rest of the route. I think it was a combination of several things - the heat, too many people en route upsetting my rhythm, and my legs aching too much - that made me chuck the towel in. I’d not had a day off in 8 days either which maybe isn’t advisable for a novice like me. Think I’ll skip it completely today and try and get out there early doors tomorrow before it starts to warm up.

We all have days like that pal and they are the absolute worst. Don't let it deter you though as its probably just your body asking for a little rest.

Rest or recovery days are as important as running. Your body needs time to recover between runs or you will injure yourself. You will improve quicker and better if you factor in recovery days.

Running this morning was hell. It was 26 degrees at 9.30 at Heaton, horrible. Took it very easy and did 5k in 29 mins, normally at the end I wouldn’t be out of breath at that pace, today I was absolutely rubber ducked.

I was out at 7am and it was warm already. Pity anyone who has to run in the afternoon. I've started doing hill sprints again after just doing a 5k every day for a fortnight. Feel a lot better for it. It's probably just variation I need

Did my first proper HIIT session yesterday since I got my Garmin watch. Proper hard work but loved it. 10 x 100 yard sprints with 1 minute rest between each set . The calorie burn wasn’t that much (only 200) Max Heart 171 and beat pace 4mins 21 per mile.VO2 Max estimated at 46 which is excellent apparently. So I’ll take that .

Wanted to do 10km today but could only manage 7km- the heat / humidity was insane.

question- how many Km’s does everyone do per month? I normally do an average 90-110. Mostly regular 5kms with the odd 8-10km thrown in at weekends.

Ran about 5ish today...ridiculous. I hadhtvrun for quite some days so needed to get out.
Gut back and just melted into the sofa. Felt like I had heavy fit fur about 15mins but then again I’ve shit sleep of late.
Awful running in that heat (30’s) so I’ll pass next time. Of course...I feel ace at the time of writing which is the case almost always.
That’s why we twat about doing such endeavours.
