General Videogame Thread

Hey. I've got all of the IL-2's so hit me up if you've any questions. The single player has 2 main versions - career which is a fairly dry timeline of missions with moving fronts as per results etc. The other is scripted campaign which has more of a storyline.

DCS and Rise whilst free don't have much base content - you get 2 aircraft in DCS to start with, the rest are pricey DLC, which is fair enough given the effort put into em. One thing I'd say is almost a must though is a headtracker if you don't have one.
Thanks. It all sounds kinda involved but i think I'd enjoy a more realistic sim to the ace combats of this world. Anything you'd suggest for a beginner? Last time I played anything similar would probably be knights of the sky back on the Amiga

Cheers. Just got to decide which one now. Cliffs of Dover Blitz edition has all the spitfires and hurricanes and is only a fiver, but is a rehash of a 2011 game and reviews suggest it shows it in places.

I like the look of Bodenplatte but it's forty quid and requires the base game, another forty quid, to play on steam.

Getting expensive already this! I'll go with Dover and if I get into it progress from there. I'll jig the PS4 controller for now and lookout for a cheap joystick and maybe throttle.

I can't vouch for how it'll be on a controller, but as an aside, they often do sales, that are pretty good. Last one a few weeks ago had the base and expansions at like £6 each. Might be worth keeping an eye out for those. That's the only time I get any expansions.

@SWP's back

I'm enjoying a season with Ricciardo / Renault. I've increased the difficulty of the AI to medium 40 and will probably turn off the brake assist later. I'm using "flashbacks" less frequently but it does come in handy if there's a collision or I've overshot a corner. In between races I'm doing time trials with different teams to get use to each track, I can spend ages on time trials beating PBs and the ghost rival. I will start to switch other assists off as I progress but quite enjoying things at the minute.

Will start My Team in a few weeks when I've completed a season.

Embargo has been lifted on the Beata testers for flight simulator 2020 to show it running and it looks absolutely incredible.

You can make it as hardcore or as casual as you want and everyone I've watch on YouTube have said it's the most realistic and visual looking sim they have ever seen.

If you have a top end rig what can do 4k then it's going to look incredible but even if you have a low end to mid range pc of it will still look great. Digital Foundry tested it on a Ryzen 5 16GB Ram GTX 1060 and they were still getting 1080P 60FPS and the world still looked great

Now that is my setup apart from I'm on a Ryzen 3 processer so I should hit about 50FPS.

Also they tried it with an Xbox controller and that works really well although you still need a mouse and keyboard but ultimately HOTAS is the way to go.

Really excited for this. 18th August.

Got Il-2 Sturmovik CLOD and my joystick arrived last night from Amazon... and it doens;t work. My fault for going cheap and cheerful but throttle isn;t correct (jumps from 100 to 0) and steam was having huge issues detecting it. It would let me use the joystick in menus but not in game, very odd.

So i've returned that one and a mate of mine is actually thinking of selling a Logitech 3D Pro because he's hardly used it. May grab that off him for a trial and see if I can get into flight sims. Hope its a good choice for a beginner.

My wife thinks i;m having a midlife crisis, search history is now full of things like joysticks, flaps and thurstmaster.

Just watched the DF video (Is there any other channel that can hype a game so much?) and it looks incredible. It’s everything you dreamt of as a kid when you thought about games in the future.

The system requirements are naturally very high and it looks like there nothing on the market that can run the game at 4K 60fps. I’m hoping it scales well though and the bit with the i5 8400 / 16GB / GTX1060 gives me hope for my ageing PC (i5 4460 / 12GB / GTX1060) that I’ll be able to run the game at 30fps on medium.

That's pretty much my specs but I have a Ryzen processer rather than Intel.

Target for those settings on medium are 1080P 40-50FPS. Digital Foundry said even on those settings the game still looks amazing. Just textures, shadows and Anti-aliasing won't look as good as top end PC's.

You can customise the whole game to what you want so stuff like realistic clouds and weather you might have to turn down also draw distance won't be an issue as the map is streamed to your pc in real time via Microsoft Azure cloud system so a fast internet speed is an absolute must. Looking at least 20MB you can download parts of the world you want to fly in but Microsoft have not said how big a download that will be.

I'm on Xbox game pass for Xbox and PC and have pre-registered it. The actual game size on PC is 89GB

See also ObsidianAnt for YT.

I reckon it's gonna look pretty good - see quill's system for example, not a super computer by any means. I'm on a 6700k and 980ti (so 4 years old at least, but runs anything decently) but with terrible internet which might be a kicker. I think it'll be mindblowing even not set to max on these given FSX fully modded looks good even now, but has a nasty frame hit sometimes. Either way, I can see myself shelling out for the full version after about 2 hours in the basic one. Particularly looking forward to the third party stuff. I wouldn't touch FSX now without Traffic Global and FSXWX etc.

It's a shame Manchester isn't one of the premium airports, but I'm sure someone will resolve that before long.

It's worth getting Gamepass for a month just to try it out. I'm not really keen on the Gamepass selection but apparently you can get 1 month trials for a £1 so essentially renting the game for a single pound seems a no brainer.

There might even be a decent deal or two for the game on HUKD once the game has been out for a month so it could work out cheaper in that sense as well.

Yeah, the gamepass is hit and miss, I tend to jump in and out of it if there's something I fancy. Then just cancel.

Been trying to get this bloody Logitech pro joystick to work with Il2-Sturmovik cliffs of Dover for days now, no luck. Works fine on Il2-Sturmovik 1946 but for some reason it just won't let me map the keys and axis correctly in cliffs of Dover. Or it will let me do some, but not others, just doesn't register the key press or axis at all. Yet working perfectly elsewhere.

My mate had it working fine apparently with one of the newer Il2-Sturmovik games All I want to do is fly a spitfire and a hurricane for a while and take down some 109s. BAH!

Apparently FFVII remake is on sale for £32 now. Might be spending my money on that instead and giving up this flying sim pipe dream.

I'm still undecided about which next gen console to go for. Until three years ago I was xbox through and through but it felt a bit flat, so I bought a PS4 pro and loved all the exclusives on it.

The problem is, I think the Xbox game pass is such good value. All exclusives are on it for 10 pounds a month whereas PS exclusives are 55 each.

I have a feeling PS might go the same way with the game pass thing, they reckon online play could be free and you just get a game pass at £10 a month or just buy the game outright but online play is free. I think I’ll still end up,with ps5 but I want a new pc first as mine is slowly dying

I hope so mate.

I think a disappointing feature of the new Xbox is that the controller and dashboard haven't even changed. It feels like when the Xbox One X came out. At least PlayStation have changed the design and the new controller looks fantastic as well.

The Xbox one controller is having some minor tweaks. For me it's the best controller so doesn't need to be reinvented. I'm part of the Xbox insider program and next week Microsoft are sending me a completely new dashboard experience for me to test. If everything is ok it'll be rolled out to all Xboxes in October
