Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

Sterling should have had another ten goals at least this season, it's not the first time he's fucked up from ridiculously easy positions, still way too inconsistent.

Yes we missed sitters, but how the fuck is that not a foul on Laporte for that second goal, it was the clearest trip we could ever see.....had that been Martial, they'd probably have given a penalty.....still down to the manager though. £20m a yea r for that!!

You cannot escape the FACT that under Pep we have gone out three times in the Champs League to vastly inferior teams, Spurs, Monaco and now Lyon. I think Pep has a mental thing with it, he does strange things, but overall 2 titles in 4 seasons, stay another 4 and win 2 more, i am happy. Deep breath, move on.

It's not concerning its refreshing to see someone call it out as it is. Rather hear that then the typical we had chances, were so unlucky im so proud of how we played bla bla bla

he looked pissed off tbf.. imagine missing the birth of your kid because you’re fucking about trying to be something you at not (a winger)

I cant blame Pep for this loss.

We had several good chances to score throughout the game but only took one of them.

The Jesus and Sterling misses in particular were absolutely mind boggling.

To miss one, let alone two, chances of that calibre is sickening.

But lets be honest blues, Bayern would've absolutely bummed us in the next round anyway.
No question If he picked the same team. That team was awful. then compound it by making Only two subs and leaving your two most energetic players on the bench.
mate, that is ALL on pep.

very thoughtful Stevie but cant help think he's made a complete hash of a wonderful opportunity. All our creative and positive players were on the bench. Bossed by a team finishing 7th in the "french" league...yes french league.
I agree with you mate on showing them too much respect but some numpties calling for peps head. A lot of trolls out here tonight

All the quarter finals have a similar feel to it, undone by lesser opposition, and because of Pep’s fiddling with formation we don’t play our best game

He hardly fiddled - he destroyed our shape and structure, picked three defensive midfield players, left much of our talent on the bench and saddled the players with a system they were unfamiliar with. The senior players will be livid. Pep has let them down.

I'm sure this will anger the fan boys and happy clappers but Pep is guilty of gross mismanagement tonight, from the team selection to the substitutions (or lack thereof). His loyalty to Gundogan and Rodri is also inexplicable. If this was any other manager there would be a danger of the boot, but as long as his mates are in the boardroom it ain't happening.

A shit show from the start.

Most of this falls on Pep, that initial formation/set up was just fucking bizarre. It gave too much respect to a good but not amazing Lyon team (lowest finish for 23 years in Ligue Un!).

What is wrong with playing our style, with our players, some of whom happen to be the best in the world who were all in a high from besting Madrid?

It's just not good enough from Pep. He does this time and time again in CL.

He then essentially asked our players to win a game by chasing it from a goal down with half an hour left. Increasing the pressure to perform, which no doubt led to the individual errors. Laporte's pass for the 2nd, Sterling's miss, Ederson's blunder all avoidable but all made when in a fucking dire position being asked to play a system unfamiliar and unsuitable for the situation. Not changing it sooner just amplified the clusterfuck.

Not going to down the VAR rabbit hole, that goal shouldn't have stood, but there was so much else wrong in that performance that it almost pales into insignificance. Questions need to be asked, that was fucking wank.

And thanks for everything Silva, gutted for him that it ended in such a fashion. If you could take Fernandinho with you to Italy too that'd be great. Love him but old father time has caught up with him too, it's like he's running with an open parachute these days.
It’s not a post I like agreeing with, but you are 100% correct.

No doubt Pep got it wrong today but that does not excuse player errors. One of the reasons Pep tries different things like today is because the players can't always be relied on to go out and deliver in this competition. He's tried to compensate for their weaknesses rather than just playing to their strengths. The fact is he has come a cropper with both approaches. We need some new players to help Pep elevate us again.

I've not read this thread but if comments are anything like those on Twitter, it'll just have me shaking my head at the state of some of our supporters. Pep is not perfect but Pep is not the problem.
