Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

It seems some people have forgotten what it was like before Pep. We were atrocious in Pellegrini's last season. This season, in one of Pep's worst seasons with a terribly broken defense, we got 81 points in the league. In Pellegrini's last season we finished with 66 points! We have progressed enormously as a club under Pep. He is by far the best manager that we've ever had. I can only see us regressing under the next manager.

The single greatest problem we have is our player recruitment in defensive areas. It is quite possibly the worst in Europe. For the money spent, I'd say only United come close to us in terms of money wasted. I would honestly get rid of every defender at the club aside from Laporte. That is not just a reaction to this game. We have been awful defensively for a long time. We weren't great even in the 100 point season. Our defensive issues were just masked by the rest of the side.

My greatest frustration is that we still have the same people at the club making decisions on the recruitment of defenders. Rodri is starting to also look like a pretty poor signing. He is certainly no replacement for Fernandinho and we could have replaced Gundogan with a potato and seen improvements. I have zero confidence that we'll make the right defensive signings this season.

I cant blame Pep for this loss.

We had several good chances to score throughout the game but only took one of them.

The Jesus and Sterling misses in particular were absolutely mind boggling.

To miss one, let alone two, chances of that calibre is sickening.

But lets be honest blues, Bayern would've absolutely bummed us in the next round anyway.
If the match was only second half then I agree with your analysis completely...but what the fuck were we doing in first half? Playing Fernandinho and creating zero chances...That is the part which hurts so much

He keeps saying year in year out we are not ready.
When exactly will we be ready?
Weve been in it 10 years now.

Absolutely terrible and performances like that are simply unacceptable given the resources behind the club.

The individual errors will probably get the headlines but if you take a step back and look at the performance as a whole, we are a million miles away from where we want to be.

Four years into the manager's term and given the investment made, our team should be passing it around like clockwork with the right players in the right positions, but we looked like a bunch of amateurs tonight. Poor team selection, poor substitutions and the players lost their heads when the pressure was on.

Guardiola has been overindulged and after the good we're now seeing the flip side of it.

Let’s not forget we were cheated yet again for their 2nd.
We were well in control and we’re going for the winner,
We bossed that 2nd half until that shit VAR CUNTS decision the dirty bastards!
I said a long time ago, we are good enough to win it but we won’t be let win it!
Whilst we keep this victim mentality nothing will ever change. Did VAR make sterling score a conversion, or make LaPorte (if he’d been fit all season we’d still have finished a long way second) play the most ridiculous cross field pass of the night, or make Ederson drop one an under 12 keeper would have held on to?
I usually fall into the happy clapper brigade but the only 3 letter word that cost us, tonight at least, was PEP not VAR.

Yes hes said you always play this way and we dont. But we will train at it for 3 days and we will be better.

No chance could we do that.

We are man city. We should play our way. But he keeps fucking it up when it matters

Fair point can’t disagree with that, I’m livid with him

Does anyone else think our team is massively overrated. Maybe we got carried away by all the media hype about our 'billion dollar' squad.
Our rivals think any player we sign is world class, maybe playing with better players hides the limitations of some of our players.
I genuinely think Laporte is very overrated, I always get a feel he has some mistake in him. This is his 2nd UCL qf cock up.
We don't have a world class DM, Rodri is good but slow and gets easily overrun.
Jesus will never be a striker, even a half decent defender pockets him easily, his work rate and dribbling skills are good though.
Gundogan should be playing for a midtable Bundesliga side, not ManCity.
Ederson is not a great shot stopper, but least of our worries.
Sniff

Look at Bayern yesterday. They went for Barcelona’s throat from the first minute. It would not made a stuff of difference if UEFA or Var were against them. They would still have won by a cricket score.
what Was stopping us doing similar?

A full season of shite defending undermining the team & weakened even more tonight.

Slow centre midfield.

Plus shite finishing. Imo solve the 1st 2 & the other will come.
