One thing we had with Kompany, a not as old & bonkers Otamendi, and a not sad Stones, as well as with Laporte of course, was a bunch of CBs that could be really good at being aggressive high up the pitch. I think what Pep thought with Fernandinho was that he could replicate that, but circumstances mean he's not quite got what it takes.
I actually rate Garcia, there's a good CB in him. But right now the fact we only have one CB that can play high up decently is killing us, and it's left us with an environment that's too tough for Garcia to flourish with us. Particularly as right now he's not at the level of being a top aggressive CB. No surprise given his size and age. Had we had a 17/18 or 18/19 situation, with at least 3 really reliable CBs it would have been a safe place for him to develop without the hiccups being too costly. And to be honest if we sign another top defender, on top of Aké with Laporte, he might have just had a real good opportunity to flourish.
Alas, he's made his bed. With tonight's result it may prompt us into getting a couple really good defenders in with Garcia leaving now.
