More details and talk about the Arena. Main article in the MEN...

The existing Arena has been a shithole for decades. Its tired, dated and as it was never designed acoustically for music, has always been renowned for its crap sound at gigs, unless you are front area centre.
The owners have never spent any of its huge profits on any kind of updates or improvements in all that time.
But as soon as this new build comes along, they claim its about to be revamped.... just a coincidence I suppose.

I don’t believe they’ll revamp it - it’s just talk - where did the increase to 24k come from?. If the new arena gets the go ahead - they’ll argue it‘s not worth it because of the increased competition... and if they see off the new arena they’ll just keep taking the profits... why bother to revamp when there’s no competition. The existing Arena has no commitment to quality and seem to be bitching because someone’s threatening their gravy train.

Manchester City owners have postponed plans to expand the Etihad Stadium until the long-term impact of Covid-19 is known.
The Carabao Cup winners have previously outlined plans to expand the stadium’s north stand since adding 6,000 extra seats to the east stand ahead of 2015-16 season.

However chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak told the club’s website that it would be unwise to commit to new projects in the current climate.

“The word here is pragmatism and sensibility. Some of the projects continue and we see the sense of expediting them, others because of the challenges that come with Covid we had to put on pause,” said Al Mubarak.

“The expansion of the stadium, the changes that we wanted to do with hospitality, we’re going to have to figure out as it goes what is going to be the expectation post-Covid in the stadium and what is going to work and what isn’t going to work.

“One thing is clear is that we can’t think in the same way, we have to adjust and accept what Covid has done will have an impact on the future. We have to be ready to adjust to that.”

City have played at the 55,000-capacity arena since 2003, with the stadium having been built initially to stage the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Expansion plans aim to turn the stadium’s north stand into a ‘Blue Wall’, inspired by Borussia Dortmund’s Yellow Wall.

If remember he said everything including expansion will be looked at in a post covid world and somethings may need to be changed or postponed he never said anyting in particular would be definitely postponed. Think myself they will see if fans are allowed and come back in numbers later this season and decide next summer.
It could just as easily be one of the continued or expediated projects.

Expediated ?

Comparing London and anywhere else, the per capita transport spend in this country is a national disgrace. Bias towards the capital is so far out of alignment with equitable major transport projects yet nobody in government bats an eyelid. No MP ever raises it and then they throw us a bone like HS2 and then over time think of every excuse under the sun to slowly degrade and devalue it so that in the end it's nothing more than a shadow of the project that was envisaged and ends up scrapped or resembling a half arsed peacemeal solution. Yet Cross link is fully supported from start to escalated price finish with no expense spared. As I said national disgrace.

This is to do with central government's return on investment calculation set in the 'green book'. The current government are considering changing the calculation.

As it stands London is more densely populated and wealthier so almost every central government investment is forecast to achieve a higher return on investment than anywhere else. London gets the investment and gets stronger so over time its become a self fulfilling prophecy.
