Nobody can argue that Alonso and Busquets had hugely successful careers and neither had pace. But in the Premier League Alonso played in a very defensive Benitez side, and we are collectively nowhere near Barca’s peak level or Spain 2008-2012. Both Spain and Barca fully controlled big matches, we don’t.
Rodri’s job is supposed to be as a 6 with 2 free 8’s which we can’t do In big games because he’s not got the legs. The Athletic have written decent articles about this as a reference. Look at how deep either KDB and gundo have played this season, compared to our 2 x no. 8’s in 2016-19.
Nobody is saying the DM has to run round like a headless chicken- Fernandino has never done this. But in this league you do need legs to stop a counter if your meant to play alongside 2 free 8s. Rodri is a good option for the squad and will hopefully improve, but much like Garcia, there is a clear weakness in his game when you take the blue tinted specs off.
I also take the point that there aren’t many, if any players with peak Fernandinho’s qualities. But no matter how we strengthen at the back we need at least one option in the squad for defensive midfield who has the pace and power to deal with counter attacks in certain games (e.g Liverpool and the rags). I don’t think we will sign one, but it will be a problem.
