Bluemoon Angling Thread

where abouts in Portugal Newman? I'm down in the Algarve and do a bit in barragems.

We started on the Bravura which is nearest to my mate's villa in Lagos. Over the years though, we have gravitated inland because we like fishing rivers like the Sado at St Margerita, the Mira (?) at Odemiera and, further afield, the Guadiana all over the place.

We found we were travelling so far, it was cheaper to stay up there. So these days, we spend the first night in the villa and then go on tour before returning to the villa for the last night. My mate plans the trips, finding dams on Google earth and then booking gorgeous accomodation close by at vineyards and such like. Odeveilas (?) Is one of our favourites but we've fished most major dams in the interior within 3 hours of Lagos.

This October, we're heading much further North.

Sounds great.
Are there any spots on the lower Guadiana and the Mira you would recommend?

The Mira we fished from the stands in Odemeira town centre but we got harrassed off Eastern Europeans to give them our carp so haven't been back for a couple of years. I'll find out some options from my mate, he's the "local" and does all the planning.

There's a very good, very expensive (€50 a day) lake on the Algarve with very large carp in it near Portimao. You can actually see the smaller of the two lakes on the site from the main road between Faro and Lagos. It's worth a day if you are ever feeling flush.

Thanks Newman.
Yeah I've heard about that place, prefer to catch natural fish plus I'm a tight git!!

Plenty of lakes in Extremadura region. Fished there for carp about 8 years ago on lake Orrelana and Garcia. Still huge potential on these vast waters. Prebaiting and patience has potential massive rewards.

Got out on the Ribble yesterday for an afternoon session. It was flooded but falling. I went for a one rod, roving approach to try to find the fish. I fished three swims and couldn’t find them. Blank. My barbel results are very poor this year: six sessions for two fish.

Another afternoon on the Ribble yesterday with a single rod roving approach. It had fallen further but was still perfect. Fished three pegs again. Hit and lost a fish in the second swim so gave that one a couple of hours. Another bite and I landed a big chub, close to 5lb. Nice but not the quarry. When I made my final move all the hotspots were taken so ended up in an area I didn’t really fancy. A massive otter drifted through the swim as it go dark so I gave up. As well as the otter I saw a Little Egret and the day before a deer at close range, so it wasn’t a waste.
This is the worse season I’ve ever had for barbel. I can only put it down to the ridiculous increase in anglers/poachers on the river. Some of the swims I’m fishing are usually overgrown but this year they are big and flattened, often full of litter or fire residue. Maybe the fish have wised up, moved or changed their behaviour. Or maybe those otters are starting to make a dent.

Do you think your lack of fishing time has had an effect ? Not sure if I imagine it but I'm sure I'm fishing better and catching more now I'm fishing regularly. Sort of getting into the swing of it.

Yes. I’m fishing fairly often but not for long periods. Definitely a factor. Mainly it’s bad luck, being in the right place at the wrong time. Usually by this time of year I’ve done lots of nights, whereas this year I haven’t due to two separate foot injuries. I also can’t walk as far. So yes, ultimately it’s Mainly my own fault. In my experience ( I do keep a fishing diary!) when I have these bad spells they precede a golden spell. I like to break a PB every year but haven’t done yet this year. Obviously that gets harder as time goes by too! It’s definitely a disappointment to do two consecutive days in perfect conditions on six different pegs and catch no barbel, though.

I was thinking earlier about all the great anglers down the years and remembered an old boy called Dennis White. Back in the day he was a top match angler who fished for the mighty Barnsley Blacks and represented England on numerous occasions. I had the privilege of meeting Dennis a few years ago in a tackle shop in Barnsley and told himhow much I respected him as an angler, and that I'd read his book on swing and quivertip fishing when I was a teenager.

He's 76 years old now and as recently recovered from the coronavirus. What a character Dennis is, lovely fella.

Remember him from angling times/mail in the 80's. Bobb Nudd also still kicking about - looks the same as he did 30 years ago, with the flat cap hiding the slap head.

There was a big flood on The Ribble so I went again yesterday afternoon and caught it high, coloured and dropping. Perfect again. This time I couldn’t fail. The first peg I fished was a banker but two blokes upstream in the opposite bank thought it was OK to engage in an ongoing discussion at approximately the volume you’d use in a nightclub, so I knocked that one on the head and moved. It was hard work as lots of grass was coming down the river, not affecting presentation but ruining my tackle as it clogged the rod rings, causing the line to weaken and snap a couple of times.

Rather than roaming I decided to stay put with a big smelly bait, right until after dark, trying to ambush a big fish in the move. I blanked yet again. My rubbish season continues.

As posted last night I went fishing this morning, and what a mix of luck.

Got there about 7.30 to find someone in the place I fished previously, so chose a spot a few pegs away. Set up my new barbel rod to freeline the margins, and a waggler rod, got snagged on the bottom plumbing the depth twice ffs!!!

Had used a hook to nylon on my freeline setup but hook length was only about 6 inches and a different colour to the main line, and looked a mess, so after a 30 mins without any luck I decided to alter to go straight through, so cast my waggler in instead and got snagged on the bottom again!!! at this point I decided to move to the next peg. By now the guy on my previous visits peg had started catching on the tip, then, no sooner had I got established in my new spot when the wind got up, blowing across my swim. This made presentation difficult on the waggler and all I could get was small stuff on the drop(mainly little perch that always seem to swallow the lot). In the meantime an old couple came and fished the peg I started on, I told him about the snag, but it didnt phase him as he feeder fished tight to the island. I went back on to my new rod and after missing a couple of bites close in touch ledgering,(probably small stuff) I desperately needed some inspiration, the guy on my previous visits peg was now bagging up with decent looking fish, making me look like a right idiot. I know, I will ledger against the island, no presentation issues there, as I altered my new rod setup yet again the old guy came over, he said,I found that snag you were on about, and produced a rod and reel that he had hooked and reeled in!!! I must have loosened it for him. I cast my ledger in baited with meat and started getting faint knocks that seemed impossible to hit, the white "tip" on this new rod is pretty stiff, not like my old shimano twin powers that could detect a minnow. Its now past midday so I got my bacon and cheese sarnie out, and as I was eating I actually managed to hit a bite, a decent feeling fish too which shed my hook after about 5 seconds. Fck this Im off now!!!(then thought about the tenner it had cost). Tried again on the float, but it was a lost cause thanks to the fcking wind(reminded me how much I always had hated fishing in windy conditions). I was having bites on my ledger though, so concentrated on that, swapped between spam and frankfurter and started getting better bites. I soon hit one and after a decent scrap(that means not losing it) I landed my first ever barbel, and on my new barbel rod too, well my whole outlook changed, and I had two carp and another barbel (this one in the margins with just a baited hook and no weights), this was the most pleasing as thats how I had wanted to fish in the first place. It was past 3oclock by then and I packed up. As you can tell by the above, I aint no mr crabtree, and more is needed after my time away from the sport, hard work. I had christened my new rod at the first attempt though, and caught my first ever barbel. That is easily enough to have me looking forward to next time, hopefully catching chub on the small river behind my house.
where did you fish

Not good. My mates and I declare a "man in crisis" situation if one of us blanks twice on the trot. It won't last.
